5:38 PM local (6:08 PM IST): The frustration caused by incessant rain ends in the game being abandoned without the flip of the coin. Australia would be a tad pleased with the result as they will be facing Afghanistan in their last group stage game, albeit the contest won't be anything close to a cakewalk. This result has opened up the chances of Afghanistan and England to qualify for the knockouts, and tomorrow's contest will be significant in that context. For now, I, Keshav, on behalf of my colleague, Pradeep, bid you goodbye. See you soon again.
Let's hear from the two captains:
Steven Smith (Australia captain): I saw a few days of rain but I didn't expect it to be washed out. Not ideal but can't do much about it. (Who was the most frustrated during the rain?) Oh Marnus, well and truly (laughs). He was wandering around the room bugging every single person. He just bugged us the entire time (laughs). We were probably looking at another team for a rain-reduced game. We've got a squad of 15 players and you've got to utilize them as well as we can. Onto our next game against Afghanistan. If we win, we're locked in the top four. (On that game coming up) They're a dangerous side like any team in the tournament. That's the beauty of this tournament - anything can happen on any day. Been able to fit in a few rounds of golf in as well to keep the boys up and about. It's been good so far. We kept our cool out in the field (against England). It looked like they would get to 400 but we managed to keep them to 350 particularly with the dew. All the guys batted beautifully and it was a good team performance.
Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain): It is frustrating. We'd have obviously loved to play a game of cricket. The guys were confident coming into the game. We don't really have to say much from a motivation point of view. The boys were confident after the game against Afghanistan. The moment you mention Australia, the boys are up. Disappointing for fans. We didn't really get to the point where we would have had to alter the XI for a shortened game. We would have trusted what we had in our XI. We had enough guys from a flexibility point of view. A lot of guys have played T20 now. Heinrich Klaasen has recovered from his fitness. The spirits are good in the team. I heard Steve speak about golf--we'd love to have that in our team (laughs). We'll get to see them (England) tomorrow when they go against Afghanistan. We'll get an idea then on what we need to know. That becomes another important. England on paper are one of the best sides. We'll see how it goes and then start preparing.
The game has ended in a washout and the two points are divided between South Africa and Australia. Let's have a look at the points table.
5:10 PM local (5:40 PM IST): The game has been abandoned due to incessant rain. Both South Africa and Australia will get a point each as a result of this washout.
5 PM local (5:30 PM IST): What a bummer this is turning out to be! The much-anticipated clash, which has been building up excitement, is now in jeopardy due to the incessant rain. The delay is definitely disappointing, but we’re hoping the weather clears soon so we can finally get the action underway. Stay tuned, and let’s hope for a break in the rain!
4:30 PM local (5 PM IST): Not much has changed since the last update. It is drizzling heavily in Rawalpindi and it means that even if rain stops, the groundsmen would have a huge task at their hands. We might as well witness helicopter drying up the outfield but for that drizzle will have to cease.
SKV: "What will be the aim of both teams if there would be a cut-off match?" Firstly, the captain winning the toss would want to bat first. Secondly, with fewer overs, the batters won't have the luxury to take their time to settle on the wicket. But the interesting part is that both sides have players who also feature in the T20 side. That means that we would nonetheless have a thrilling contest only if the conditions allow.
One of the fans invaded the pitch to hug Rachin Ravindra in his comeback game against Bangladesh. Check out the details below:
Praveen Kumar: "Update about weather?" Not the news you wish to hear—it has started raining heavily now.
3:47 PM local (4:17 PM IST): The cut-off time for a 20-over-per-side game is 7:32 PM local (8:02 PM IST). However, sadly for the fans and the players, it keeps pouring here in Rawalpindi.
3:30 PM local (4:00 PM IST): The live visuals are in, confirms that the drizzle is still on, and we can see puddles forming on the outfield. That’s an even bigger concern, as once the rain stops, the ground staff will need some time to clear them. Looks like we’re in for a long haul, folks! Stay with us as we wait for the weather to clear up and the action to begin.
Former Pakistan quick, Mohammad Amir, lambasted the Mohammad Rizwan-led side following their comprehensive loss to India. Check out what he had to say:
3 PM local (3:30 PM IST): We’ve officially started to lose overs now. The situation on the ground remains unchanged— the covers are firmly in place, and the waiting game continues. We’ll keep you posted with any updates as soon as the rain clears up. Stay tuned!
Swapnajit: "If this match gets washed out, then Afghanistan gets a big chance." Absolutely, if the points are split as a result of a washout, then both Afghanistan and England would have a chance of bouncing back to qualify.
Sonu: "Toss time?" The conditions haven't improved as of now, and hence there's no official update on toss.
Navan: "South africa have an upper hand in this game as both their bowling and batting departments are in form. Aussies have good batting but lack in bowling." In the absence of Australia's pace trio, the other bowlers covered up well in the game against England, but it remains to be seen if they remain consistent or succumb under pressure.
