That brings us to the end of another cliffhanger of a contest. Not many teams have beaten Chennai Super Kings in back to back matches but Lucknow have managed to do the unthinkable. Two brilliant centuries from Ruturaj Gaikwad and Marcus Stoinis but in the end it was the knock of Stoinis which turned out to be difference between the two teams. The win has also propelled LSG to the 4th spot while CSK goes down to the 5th spot. The IPL carnival continues with Delhi Capitals slated to square off against the Gujarat Titans tomorrow. Keep following Sportskeeda for all sporting actions but for now this is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) signing off on behalf of my fellow commentator Shashwat Kumar. Goodnight! Cheers!
Marcus Stoinis (Player of the Match): Look I think in these competitions there are many better opening batters than me. It's nice to get there early but I am happy settling in the middle order. It's not just go go go, it was ebs and flows in the whole innings. We targetted the bowlers and wanted to keep the run rate in control. For a while I thought I couldn't hit a boundary. Maybe that's what it looked like on the outside. It's about planning and structuring your innings and targetting your bowlers. Yeah look I do think it's changing. The impact player brings another element to it but the way teams are taking on the powerplay it's looking dangerous. No I have got a great relationship with the coach. Me not getting a contract I knew that a while ago. On the playing front I still want to make sure that I am in the team but as far as contract goes I have no problem if a young player takes my place.
KL Rahul (Lucknow Supergiants captain): Very very special especially when the game is like that. We were way behind the game for the majority of the run chase so special to pull off something like this. It was a fresh start. They got off to a great start and put pressure on the bowlers. I thought 170-180 was a par score. It was phenomenal to see Stoinis from the outside. It was much more than power hitting. He batted very smartly. We wanted to be brave as a team. We have a few games where we couldn't get past 170. We felt we needed one power hitter in the top three. Then you have Pooran and the other Indian players towards the end. This was our gameplan. Yeah I have also realised that T20 cricket has changed in the last two years. You know you have to go a bit more harder in the powerplay. The impact player rule gives the freedom to the batters. Things are coming out well for me having not played much T20 cricket in the recent past. Barring the openers everyone is flexible. I hope I get the catch of the tournament award.
It's time for the post match presentation ceremony with Harsha Bhogle.
Deepak Hooda: Thoughts were pretty clear. We needed 14 runs an over and we just wanted to hit the gap and get boundaries. To be honest I didn't had too many options. These guys are tough to handle. Marcus batted like a warrior. He was there from over number two. Kind of a motivational knock. We were hundred percent in the game. The dug out was pretty sure that we will fight till the end and win the match. These two points makes a huge difference in our team as well. We are coming down to the business end of the tournament and winning against CSK is always special.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings captain: Tough pill to swallow but good game of cricket. LSG played really well at the back end. We had in control till the 13-14th over. Hats off to Stoinis. It (dew) played a part. Huge amount of dew and it took our spinners away from the game. If there was no dew, we would have controlled the middle overs and taken the game of cricket. Part of cricket, you cannot control it. Long way to go (still) in the tournament. (On Dube and his entry point) Obviously Jaddu is batting at 4 and we lost a wicket in the powerplay, so he was the one to come in at that stage. We have a clear process that he (Dube) is the one to come if a wicket falls after the powerplay. (On the score) Batting first, we could not have gotten more than that. To be honest, I never thought it was enough, it was about par. I knew it will go down till the last over. Credit to them, they batted really well.
Lucknow Supergiants won by 6 wickets (with three deliveries to spare)
Marcus Stoinis 124*(63) | Matt Henry 1/28(4) Ruuturaj Gaikwad 108*(60) | Matheesha Pathirana 2/35(4)
It was always going to be a difficult run chase for the Lucknow Supergiants and when they lost Quinton de Kock on the very first over, it looked like CSK would continue their juggernaut at their fortress. KL Rahul struck a couple of exquisite shots to get going before perishing at the hands of Mustafizur Rahman.
The pressure was well and truly on LSG but Marcus Stoinis who was sent in at No 3 looked in blistering touch and batted superbly to keep LSG in the game. However he didn't get any support from the other end as Devdutt Padikkal the impact player struggled big time. He couldn't lay bat on ball before getting castled by a pearler from Matheesha Pathirana. Stoinis on the other hand was playing a magical knock and was joined in by Nicholas Pooran.
When the two came out in the middle the required rate was hovering around 14-15 and it looked a very tough ask for the Supergiants. Stoinis calculated his bowlers perfectly and in the company of Pooran kept plundering the CSK bowlers to all corners of the park. Pooran provided the impetus with a 15 ball 34 which included a couple of sixes.
The 20 run over turned the game on its head but the wicket of Nicky P again tilted the scales in favour of CSK. However Stoinis had other ideas and in Deepak Hooda he found a perfect ally. Stoinis went onto smash his maiden IPL century in the penultimate over with Deepak Hooda also smashing some important boundaries to get the equation down to 17 required off the final over.
Stoinis smashed a six and three fours to finish the match off and win the match for his side which looked dead and buried at one stage. Pathirana again was the pick of the bowlers for CSK finishing with figures of 2/35.
This is the highest run chase at this venue. Marcus Stoinis is thrilled to bits. Sheer brilliance from the Australian to get their side home. LSG have now beaten CSK twice in a row. What a performance from Stoinis. LSG were behind the eight ball for the majority of the innings and it was the individual brilliance from Stoinis which took LSG over the finish line. What an effort from LSG. This will uplift their confidence going forward in the competition.
19.3 Mustafizur Rahman to Marcus Stoinis, STOINIS FINISHES IT OFF IN STYLE! WHAT A WIN, AND WHAT AN INNINGS BY MARCUS STOINIS! Another half-tracker on off, and that just sums up how badly CSK have bowled in these last two overs. He walks inside the line and helps it over short fine leg. The LSG players run out onto the pitch to embrace Stoinis, and CSK do not know what has hit them!
Stoinis is in a hurry here. To rub salt to the wound the siren has gone out and just 2 runs required off 4 deliveries. This has been a superlative knock from Stoinis.
19.3 Mustafizur Rahman to Marcus Stoinis, THIS FINDS THE FENCE TOO! STOINIS DOING IT AT A CANTER! AND IT IS A NO BALL! THE WHEELS HAVE COME OFF! Rank full toss outside off. All Stoinis has to do is throw his hands at it and he flays it past short third man!
Stoinis is playing a match winning knock here. Just seven more runs required from four deliveries. The crowd has been stunned into silence but take nothing away from this monumental knock from Stoinis. They are in total disbelief.
19.2 Mustafizur Rahman to Marcus Stoinis, FOUR MORE! Goes for the yorker but errs on the shorter side again. Stoinis, sitting deep in his crease, generates power and blasts it over the bowler's head!
Six of the first ball and what composure being shown by Marcus Stoinis under pressure. This is a big shot to play in the final over. Massive hit and trouble now for CSK.
19.1 Mustafizur Rahman to Marcus Stoinis, SIX FIRST BALL! Right in the slot outside off and Stoinis will have that for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lays back and wallops it clean over long on!
That's a good over for LSG yet again and they are very much in with a chance of winning this. 17 runs needed off the final over and both the batters will be pretty pleased with how things panned out in this over. The first two deliveries of the final over will be very crucial in determining the result of the game.

18.6 Matheesha Pathirana to Deepak Hooda, in the slot again, on middle and off. Hooda shimmies around his crease, creates room and slogs it over the bowler's head. Long on mops up and keeps it to two
18.5 Matheesha Pathirana to Deepak Hooda, goes shorter, just outside off. Hooda backs away and swishes hard at it. Does not make any contact
Deepak Hooda has split the field to perfection. Hooda is playing his part here and 13 runs off this over already. Crowd stunned into silence. Brilliant ball striking by Deepak Hooda.
