Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the ILT20 for tonight. The Dubai Capitals dig their own hole, they have one game remaining, and it's not looking good for them at all. The Vipers have all but confirmed their place in the first qualifier. Sherfane Rutherford (Player of the Match): Oh yeah, thankful for grabbing the opportunity. I challenged myself to make a difference for my team. It is not the best wickets to start on so I gave myself a few overs. I saw Pathan as a match up and that worked. I am gonna get some points for the catch. My family has been a backbone for me and hope they enjoyed my performance today.

Colin Munro (Desert Vipers captain): It’s pleasing for us. We wanted to qualify in the top four. We have done that now and built the momentum for the final. It was outstanding over for Rutherford which totally turned the game in our favor. Our bowlers were outstanding, couple of mishaps in the field but that happens. We haven’t got the complete performance. Always looking to improve whether winning or losing.

Rovman Powell (Dubai Capitals): I think to be honest we bowled well in patches. In the powerplay, we got three wickets. In the middle overs, we went for runs, We hope that as a batting group we batted better. Yusuf before the over he bowled three overs for 18 runs if you are a captain and see that it was natural for me to give him the ball. People will have their say that it was the turning point. We have to win the next match and hope that the other results go our way.

Desert Vipers win by 22 runs

Powell's decision to chase does not pay off yet again. While George Munsey departed early, seeing his leg stump fly out of the ground, Robin Uthappa and Sikandar Raza came together and tried to salvage something in this powerplay. Uthappa led the charge, finding the boundaries, enjoying some luck, but he was smartly pouched by Atkinson off Luke Wood with one over remaining in the powerplay.

The Vipers bowlers then went on to apply the squeeze to major effect in the middle overs. Neither Sikandar Raza nor Dasun Shanaka were able to find the boundaries on a frequent basis. Both of them departed in quick succession going deep into the second half of the chase, and Powell was left all by himself to go after this chase. But even the Capitals skipper found it hard to middle it, outfoxed by the variation in pace and unable to read the spin. Powell eventually targeted Atkinson in the 17th over, keeping them in the hunt, but Luke Wood got the better of him, and that was pretty much the end of that.
