Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the 2nd ODI between England and New Zealand. With the series level, both teams will travel to the South of London for the 3rd ODI three days later - keep an eye on our tabs for our coverage of the same, and of course, a lot, lot more! This is Rajarshi, signing off on behalf of Bala. Good night!

Jos Buttler, England captain: From the position we found ourselves in, to post a total that we got is the way we want to play our game. It was a fantastic partnership towards the end. I want us to go harder, push back, the conditions were good for seam bowling but I want us to push them back and put them off those lengths. I think it has been a hall mark of the team. Trying to get back into the ODI format, few games haven't quite played that, trying to be ultra-positive. Defining roles will come, everybody's pretty clear on the options they have in the team, today we were blessed with that batting depth. That's a huge positive for us, delighted to win and level the series today. To get a wicket second ball was perfect, and we looked to carry that momentum along.

Tom Latham, New Zealand captain: A couple of key partnerships for them towards the back end of the innings took the game away from us. Goes on to show how partnerships can change the game. We weren't able to get those last couple of wickets, but credit to Livi for the way he played. I thought the job we did with the new ball up-top was outstanding, to see Boulty back doing his thing was great. When you have the team under a bit of pressure, it's about making it count, and we weren't able to do so today. Trying to focus on these games than looking far ahead. Just about guys trying to play their roles the best they can. Hopefully, we can do that again in the next couple of games. Partnerships and being able to take the game deep could have done it for us. We got behind the rail a bit, had we had wickets in hand, things could have been different.

Liam Livingstone (Player of the Match): Wouldn't say it was a rescue mission. We pride ourselves on our depth. We build our team based on situations. Moeen played well, and then Sammy (Curran) came in and played really well. Frustrating year for me, it's a hard roll when you have a break and then has to come down the order and hit from the word go. Lean couple of months, but was looking forward to this year. Cardiff did a world of good. Just needed one innings. It's a frustrating game, sometimes it's hard to get time in the middle when you come in with 20 balls left in an innings. Frustrating couple of months, thankfully today, the hardwork of the couple of months have paid off.

The England bowlers were on top of proceedings for most part of the run-chase. They managed to extract plenty off a deck which tends batters on more occasions, and got the desired results. New Zealand were in it as long as Daryl Mitchell was out there, but there were to be no productive partnerships or support for the languid Blackcaps stroke-maker. New Zealand's lack of depth in their line-up was re-iterated today - they lost their last 6 wickets in just over 6 overs.

Devon Conway and Will Young looked to see off the threat from the left-arm pace duo of David Willey and Reece Topley after the former accounted for Finn Allen with a brutal in-swinger two balls into the run-chase. There were a few loose deliveries every now and then, and both batters keenly pounced on them. Despite that, the Kiwis were just not able to get ahead of the required rate at any stage, and they were in a bit of strife once they lost both their set batters in the span of 3 overs.

Gus Atkinson was really impressive with the ball, having come on to bowl as first change. He seemed to be too quick at times for the New Zealand batters with his pace and bounce. The wicket of Devon Conway and the instances of Mitchell being rushed onto his strokes were a testament to that. Atkinson was successful in complimenting the swing bowling from earlier, and along with Willey, Topley and Curran, turned out to be a vital cog of England's bowling department on his ODI debut.

After the departure of Conway, Daryl Mitchell was joined by skipper Tom Latham, and while the duo were out there together for a while, they just weren't able to find that passage of play to get the equation close to a run-a-ball. The fact that Moeen Ali breezed through his overs without really posing as a threat didn't help the cause of the Blackcaps one bit. Topley, who was wicketless in his first spell, had a couple right away in his second, sparking a middle-order capitulation. Mitchell and Santner tried to go after Moeen eventually, but both perished in the space of two deliveries, and the game was done and dusted in the next over.

Well, that's that! The England bowlers make light work of the New Zealand line-up eventually, and level the series with an emphatic 79-run victory!

Credit needs to be given to Jos Buttler as well - the England skipper kept Moeen Ali on, invited the New Zealand batters to go after him, had a few more men in the circle, and the ploy worked! New Zealand are down to their tail now, and barring any miracles, England will draw level in the series in a matter of minutes from now!
