Commentary

And so, we come to the end of our coverage of the 3rd ODI between these two sides. England cannot lose this series anymore, although that might be second in their current list of priorities. Much like Australia, they've been ticking all the right boxes over the course of this series with just over a month remaining in the big event. New Zealand fail to construct a run-chase for the second time in two games, an issue which they'll need to address. Both the teams will contest each other for the 4th ODI at Lord's on Friday - keep an eye on our tabs for our coverage of the same, and of course, a whole lot more! Jos Buttler, England captain: Really pleased with the performance. I spoke at the toss about putting in a good performance and putting the opposition under pressure. We were tested with that as well with the two early wickets, but Malan and Stokes stitched a partnership and put the pressure back on them. There's levels that we can keep achieving, there's still more time as well, just great everyone buys into that. Stokes' innings - 182 - incredibly special. Dawid's played fantastically well, he always does well when given the chance. I thought the new ball spell from Woakesy and Reece Topley was as good a one as you'll see. They found lateral movement on a good wicket, the control of line and length was exceptional, and that put New Zealand behind in the game. The most important message was that of being aggressive, to achieve that kind of total and not bat the full overs was a sign of something special. Really pleased with that.

Tom Latham, New Zealand captain: I guess Stoksey and Malan played a fantastic knock. We pulled it back nicely at the back end and out back was against the wall when we were 40-4. They could've scored 400 at one point but we did good work. It's a fantastic surface to bat but they bowled really well with the new ball. Stokesy played fantastic and full credit to him. GP played well but we are thoroughly outplayed here but has an opportunity in a couple of days to level the series.

Ben Stokes (Man of the Match) - Happy with the performance. It's nice to come back into the team after a while and contribute towards winning games. I apologize to him upstairs (For overtaking Roy as the leading individual run-scorer for England) It's a good wicket and it changed under the lights We spoke that New Zealand get off to a good start and get early wickets but we wanted to counteract that with the way that we went about it today. As experienced players, you have to go out there and show the guys that you can do that. It's not just about the words and sometimes it doesn't always happen. We didn't let the New Zealand pacers to settle initially. Putting the pressure back onto them is a sort of making them go away from their plan quicker than we did in the first few games is something we want them to do. Malan is a very consistent player, a quality player and it's unlucky for him to scramble one down the leg side. There is a little bit of treatment and I will get better and better

Liam Livingstone ends with the best figures by an England bowler on the day! But that doesn't quite paint a clear picture, the stage was set by some enthralling new-ball bowling from the duo of Chris Woakes and Reece Topley early on for Livingstone and Moeen Ali to feast on! The New Zealand top-order simply had no answer to the swing and bounce from the England new-ball duo, and the scoreboard pressure came into play as well.

A rash shot from Will Young that resulted in his dismissal was a testament to that. Young, looking to up the ante, had a mow across the line having skipped down the wicket early, and was done in by the length. Conway, Nicholls and Latham all fell failing to judge the movement off the air or deck, and England were firmly on top at the end of the powerplay. Daryl Mitchell was then joined by Glenn Phillips, and the duo looked to put up with the England attack with a counter-attack of their own.

It was a tactic which wasn't going to last for long, of course. Sam Curran got in among the wickets soon after being introduced into the attack, getting the ball to nip away from Mitchell and taking the outside edge in the process. Rachin Ravindra joined Phillips, the duo looked to labour along and try to shorten the equation, but Ravindra, too, succumbed to a bad choice of shot, trying to cut Moeen Ali from middle stump.

It was a case of batting practice for Phillips and Kyle Jamieson from then on. The duo spend quite a while in the middle, nurdling the England spinners around for ones and twos and finding the boundary on occasions. It took a second spell from Reece Topley to break that stand - Jamieson had a poke at one that lifted off the deck, and Buttler made no mistake. Phillips missed out on a hundred - he survived an LBW decision, but was caught in front for good the next ball. The innings drew to an end shortly afterwards as Livingstone mopped up the tail.

That should be that! There's handshakes all around, sharp work from Buttler to put the game to bed!
