On a wicket which seemed to aid pacers quite a bit, and with the slower ones gripping more often, the Chennai Super Kings really missed the services of Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman today. Their decision to swap Ravindra for Gleeson proved to be fatal as well - CSK were a pacer short at the latter stages. They need to find a way to get their team composition right going into their next game - a fixture against the Rajasthan Royals at Chepauk.

The Gujarat Titans needed their opening pair to come good today and build a good platform for the rest of the batting line-up. Bhardwaj Sai Sudharsan was promoted to open with Shubman Gill, and the duo proceeded to bat out a little more than three quarters of the innings themselves. They raised a record stand of 210 while at it, and as a result, ensured their bowlers had ample runs to play with. The Titans, off the bottom of the table, are down, but not out just yet. With a clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders coming up at home, they'll look to keep this momentum, finish their own campaign on a high, and can only hope for the other results to go their way.

Shubman Gill has been adjudged the Player Of The Match for his 104 off 55 deliveries! Here's what he has to say: Just a cramp, nothing more (On his absence). When you get 110k people cheering for you, every boundary, you feel better as a batsman. Just the freeness of it when we were batting in the middle, we did not have any target set in mind, we were just playing matching our target, seeing and maximizing every opportunity in front of us. We have a good camaraderie between us, we runs hard, get the twos, hit the gaps, and there's a good sense of understanding between us - we batted together quite a lot last year as well. So it's fun batting with him, watching him bat and grow with every innings. In terms of numbers, this definitely is (On whether this is GT's best opening pair). Mohit bhai has done this for us the past couple of years, he's done a tremendous job for us. His bowling was a revelation for us last year, couple of bad games here and there this year, happens to every player, but he's come back really well. The last couple of games remaining, hopefully we can turn this around. Honestly at one point, we thought 250 was there for the taking, we were in the mid-190s around the 15th over. In the last two-three overs, they bowled well. Just had a feeling we were 10-15 runs short, not in terms of the match but the Net Run Rate going forward.

Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans): Absolutely amazing - you love to see those two batters Shubman and Sai when they get going. I think it was two of the best innings I've seen. So happy to be someone on this side watching it. (How's the body feeling?) Happy to get a couple of wickets after a couple of wicketless games. The body is feeling better slowly. I have a back issue, the other game I got hit on my shoulder so struggling with that. But hopefully soon I'll be 100 per cent fit. I've bowled to him (Dhoni) in the past as well but once he comes out, anywhere in the world, it's a different kind of love. I'm so lucky to be playing at this time when he's playing as well.

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings captain): I think the fielding let us down a little bit. We gave away 10-15 runs (extra). Not up to the mark with the fielding. I think execution wise still pretty good, they played some extraordinary shots. When two batters are exceptional all around the field you cannot control them. (On the quick turnaround) It's real quick - a flight tomorrow and then just get up there in the day game. It'll be tough in Chennai against a really good side playing well. If we are to stay in the tournament we have to show up better.

The Super Kings were in sixes and sevens early in the piece - Rachin Ravindra's return to the top of the order barely lasted an over before Ajinkya Rahane called him for a dicey run, and an athletic fielding effort from David Miller saw him fall short.

Rahane fell the very next ball - producing a leading edge to an away-seaming delivery from Warrier and spooning a catch. Much was expected from skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, but once he was pouched by Rashid at deep square, the alarm bells were off for the team in yellow.

The Chennai Super Kings desperately needed their middle-order to come good today, and the duo of Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali provided them with hope after the powerplay. Mitchell led a counter-attack, and while the boundaries came along, they weren't as frequent as CSK would have desired in the first six.

It was only after the fielding restrictions were lifted that we saw the duo cut loose properly - Mitchell and Moeen, well set by then, even took on the spin duo of Rashid and Noor and came out emphatically on top. The Titans were in desperate need of breaking the partnership - they turned to Mohit Sharma for it, and the veteran medium pacer delivered.

One ball into his spell, Mohit deceived Mitchell with a knuckle delivery, and got the New Zealander to hole out to Shahrukh Khan at long off. Moeen Ali reached a half-century soon after, but he, too, fell to Mohit Sharma in his next over as Noor Ahmad caught him at deep mid wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube looked to keep the fight going. While they managed to get the better of Kartik Tyagi as the pacer from Hapur missed his line and length frequently in his two remaining overs, the left-handed duo just weren't able to take on Mohit Sharma. Mohit varied his pace, went into the pitch more often, and with the scalp of Shivam Dube, effectively closed the game out.

After that, it was a matter of time before GT wrapped things up. MS Dhoni, with a few crunchy blows, gave something for the entirety of the Ahmedabad crowd to cheer, and in the process, prevented CSK's Net Run Rate from taking a severe hit. With this win, the Titans ensure that the race for the top four have quite a few participants going into the penultimate set of games. Presentations coming up in a bit...

Yet another red-inker next to MS Dhoni's name this season! The Chennai Super Kings were out of it going into the last three itself, but having batted their 20 overs, they soften the blow to their Net Run Rate.
