Analysis

Commentary

So, that will be all from the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi! The crowds on all three days were fantastic, showing just why Test cricket in India is so much loved and so well followed! Very few expected the match to finish this early but India will not complain, having both out-bowled and out-batted Australia. They now take a 2-0 lead in the series, retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If they win one more match out of the remaining two, they qualify for the World Test Championship Final! As for the visitors, they have a lot of soul-searching to do. Selection issues and batting issues are pretty evident for Pat Cummins and his side. If they do not get their problems sorted, a whitewash cannot be ruled out! Right then, that will be all from this Test match. Ravindra Jadeja has been adjudged the Player of the Match! Here is what he has to say.

Ravindra Jadeja: (First thoughts) I was enjoying my bowling. On a pitch like this, that keeps low, I like bowling a lot. (On his expectations of the Australian batters' approach) I knew that the Australians would play their sweeps and reverse sweeps, so was ready for that right through. Actually, last night itself, they had kind of signaled their intentions of sweeping a lot. To be honest, (On whether he would prefer batters sweeping against him) I won't fancy batters sweeping the balls against my bowling on a pitch like this!

Rohit Sharma (India captain): (On how he feels about this win) Fantastic result! Looking at how things were yesterday, I thought that even after being behind by only 1 run, we were in a tricky position. But this win, after this incredible performance today, was really, really special! (On today's bowling effort by the Indian spinners) We know that on this pitch, we have to try things slightly differently by thinking differently. So Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja expected their batters to try the sweep shot a lot more. The plans were in place for that, and with these two guys being masters of these conditions, we kept patience, kept things quiet, and kept taking wickets one after another. (On today's batting approach) In a Test match on a pitch like this, it is all about making sure that the runs keep coming, no matter what. We did that really well in this second innings, using our feet well enough to both go back and come forward. That worked out really well.

Pat Cummins (Australia captain): I thought 263 was a decent score on that first day wicket. I thought the guys bounced back well after Nagpur. They batted quite well. Their innings probably matched our innings. One or two partnerships and suddenly you can get up to that 260-mark quickly. At the innings break it was quite even. (On this morning) Disappointing when we were 2 for 80 odd. The pressure was right on them. I think we'll have a review over the next few days on what we could have done differently. Pretty similar to how we played in Nagpur. (On batters deploying the sweep a lot) Everyone's up to having control over their own game. You're going to have some balls having your name. Ash and Jadeja bowled really well. We'll have a review on the shot selection. Both disappointing. This one in particular, being ahead of the game for a lot of it, it doesn't come often in India and you've got to grab them. So pretty disappointing.

Cheteshwar Pujara: It's been a great Test match. Unfortunately, I didn't get a lot of runs in the first innings. It's a special feeling (playing 100 Tests). My family has been watching the game. I was a bit nervous. It feels very special that we've won the game and to score the last boundary. We're very well-balanced in the series. (Saurashtra winning the Ranji title) Congrats to all the guys. I was following the scores but haven't done since Lunch. It's a great achievement. It's our second title in the last four years, with great effort from the team. (3rd innings) I thought we might end up chasing something close to 200-250 and we were prepared for that. It didn't go our way yesterday and we were disappointed because we conceded too many runs. If you look at this pitch, it's not an ideal shot (sweep) to play because of the low bounce. (Not playing the sweep as much) It is difficult, but that's my game. I try to use my feet as much as possible and that helps me a lot. You need to get used to the pitch initially and you just need to figure out a way to see which ones keep low and which ones turn. Once you play around 30-40 balls, you are more set. The new ball was a lot more challenging but that isn't the case with the old ball.

When play began this morning, there was no surety as to which way the match was heading. People were talking about a lead of 200 or more for Australia, good enough to take the match away from the hosts. The batting from the visitors last night was good too. With 9 wickets in hand, there was a lot more to worry about for India.

But what happened in the first session, changed the entire complexion of the game! India's spin bowling duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja finished off the visitors in a jiffy, and the tactics from Australia to sweep their way out of trouble, came back to haunt them!

The away team were dismissed with a platry total of 113, meaning that India would need only 115 runs to win. India did lose the early wicket of KL Rahul but then, in the second session, came out positive and full of intent to score, to knock the remaining runs over and bring up their 100th win against Australia in international cricket.

The footwork from the Indian batters - both while going back to defend, pull or cut, and while stepping forward to charge the bowling or drive off the front foot - was absolutely decisive. And the technique to play against the spin was first-class!

Rohit Sharma got things off to a fantastic start, not sparing any ball that was pitched further than the short length. Even after his run out, the batters continued to keep the runs coming and not get bogged down at any stage.

The pitch was never easy to bat on. Spin played a part on it right through the match. But the masterclass India put up today to play spin, was just amazing! Pat Cummins' field placements were also questionalbe. He had far too many fielders in the deep, helping the Indians pick up easy singles. Had the target been 200 or more, it could make sense. But with only 115 to defend, not having more fielders attacking, was surprising.

Virat Kohli brought up his 25000th international run, becoming the fastest to get that landmark in terms of innings. Kona Srikar Bharat was impressive towards the end, playing some fine shots and staying unbeaten in the end. Last but not the least, Cheteshwar Pujara held fort and took India to victory, by staying not out, in his 100th Test's second innings!
