Analysis

Commentary

What an incredible turnaround this has been from Australia ever since Steve Smith took over the charge after Pat Cummins had to leave for home after the 2nd Test. He still continues to be the official captain but Australia's result in the last two Tests and the ODI series will surely tempt them to make him the permanent captain. It is never easy to win a series in India after going down 0-1. The cricketing action will continue with several matches lined up tomorrow. Steve Smith (Australian captain): It's been an enjoyable tour. The way we fought back after the Test match was great. We haven't played at our best in the ODI series but we got over the line. It's the playing conditions for us. It's all about summing them up and playing accordingly. I felt like we left a few runs out there, to be honest. However, the spinners bowled beautifully. Turning point, I'm not sure what that was. It was a big grind in the field throughout and we did that nicely. In terms of our batting, the way the tail stuck around to get us to 270 was great. At one point, we didn't think we were getting past 220. It was a good win for us in the end.

Mitchell Marsh (Player of the Series): It’s natural aggression when I am batting. Playing in Waca has helped me a lot. I thoroughly enjoyed the series. We knew this is the start of our World Cup preparation and happy to come out on a winning note. I think I was very clear. Coming off an extended break, wanted to work on a lot of things. Came here really fresh and hopefully, I can get to Delhi and have fun with the boys out there.

Adam Zampa (Player of the Match): Yeah I mean I have had some success here. A tough place to come, always a huge challenge. Always pumped for India and I got some rewards today. We did well enough today, when the run rate got up, Ashton Agar turned the game on its head. The guys who bowled before me were quite brilliant. We have trust in each other, trust in our process and trust in our game plan. The message was to trust our process and game plan after the loss in the first ODI.

Rohit Sharma (Indian captain): I don't think it was too many runs. The wicket was a little challenging towards the second half but I didn't think we batted well. When you want to win games like this, partnerships are crucial and it's something that we failed to do today. (Poor shots on dismissals or good balls?) A bit of both, actually. You are born here and brought up to play on these wickets. Sometimes it will be challenging but you apply yourself to give yourself and your team a chance. It was important for one of the batters to take it deep but we didn't make to do that. (Positive takeaways?) A lot of takeaways. I'm not going to look at these three games. From the 9 ODIs we've played from the start of the year, we can take a lot from that. We can take a lot from this loss as well. We don't point fingers, that's not what this team does. We have to understand that we'll be playing in these conditions for a few months. Having said that, you have to give Australia credit. Their spinners and the pacers kept things tight. So, credit where it is due.

Ashton Agar: It was nice. Lovely to finish the series on a high like that. It's a tough place to come and play and to win. So, we're delighted. It was a nice way to start. There was obviously plenty in the pitch for me and as soon as the first ball did that, the indications were clear for me. Mitch (Marsh) came off and said 250 would be a good total out there. He said it was starting to get a bit slow and it should turn. They did a great job up top and so did the Indian openers. But as we saw, it got tougher out there. It's always fun bowling with Zampa. We're great mates and it's always fun. Usually having whiskey in his room to discuss some plans to see how we got about it.

The target wasn’t an enormous one and India needed to bat sensibly to get over the line. With the experienced and in-form top order, the Men in Blue would have definitely backed themselves to chase the score of 270. Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill started off well with the latter consistently finding the boundaries in the powerplay.

Gill struck some exceptional shots on the up and looked in complete command of proceedings. The 65-run partnership came to an end when Rohit pulled one straight down the throat of the deep midwicket fielder. Gill carried on the good work before being trapped in front by Adam Zampa. KL Rahul was sent in up the order in place of a struggling Suryakumar Yadav.

The duo batted sensibly and found the boundaries whenever the required rate climbed up. Rahul looked like the dominant batter in the partnership and looked in complete command of proceedings. Just when Rahul was looking set to win the match for the home team, Adam Zampa broke through as Rahul was holed out at long-on.

The ploy to send Axar Patel up the order didn't work as a horrible mix-up with Kohli brought about his downfall. Hardik Pandya came out with clear intentions and struck his 3rd delivery for a maximum. Kohli went onto complete a well-deserved half-century but couldn't quite carry on the good work, chipping one straight to the long-off fielder.

Suryakumar Yadav's horrendous run continued. getting bowled first ball for the third time on a row. Hardik and Jadeja then fell in quick succession in an attempt to up the ante. Mohammed Shami smashed a four and a six to excite the crowd but Stoinis came back and castled him with a full one which was the final nail in the coffin for India.

Game, set and match and this has been a sensational comeback from Australia. They were down and out in the run chase when Kohli and Rahul was going great guns but Zampa opened the game with crucial wickets and in the end, it's a comfortable 21-run victory for the Aussies. It's never easy to win a series in India after going 0-1 down. They will be ecstatic with the series win.

49.1 Marcus Stoinis to Kuldeep Yadav, RUNOUT! What a tame way to end proceedings. Slower one at the back of a length as Kuldeep charged down the pitch to miscue it to the left of Stoinis. The batter wanted a single but Siraj wanted no piece of the action. That gives Stoinis enough time to collect the ball and literally pass it to Carey to do the rest. Australia win by 21 runs and clinch the series 2-1!
