Commentary

Rohit Sharma did hint at some workload management for his bowlers with one eye on the Test series against Australia coming up. With this series wrapped up, we might see a few changes in the final ODI. For now though, that's all we have from the coverage of this contest. Right then. It's a comprehensive performance from the Indian side to seal the series. After a thrilling game in the first ODI, New Zealand would have wanted to come up with a better fight in this encounter. However, the Indian bowlers proved too hot to handle once more as they blazed through this Kiwi batting unit. In reply, Rohit Sharma notched up a half-century that led the way for India in a comfortable run chase. Plenty of positives to take for India from these two encounters as they try to keep their winning run going. More than a few issues to address for the Blackcaps before the final ODI which will be played in Indore on Tuesday.

Unsurprisingly, Mohammed Shami is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: I was just trying to hit the right line and length. Not always will you get help but when your rhythm is good you can also get wickets off bad deliveries. You know the saying, the thing you're most in love it, it becomes yours. I always try to land it on the seam, it doesn't matter how the wicket is. When you start the game you don't know how the wicket is playing. It's important you try and pass the message to your colleagues and bowling partners on how the wicket is playing.

Rohit Sharma (Indian captain): I thought the bowlers have really stepped in the last five games. They've done whatever is asked of them. Especially seeing such performances in India to nip the ball around, it's great to see. To see them being rewarded for the hard work is good. (Conditions) When we trained here, the ball was nipping around under the lights and there was good carry. We knew if they had around 250 or so on the board, it would have been challenging for us. (Plans in the next game) We batted in the first game, we wanted to chase in this one. I don't know what we'll do in Ahmedabad but we want to keep trying new things and testing ourselves. The confidence is high in the group and we want to continue in the same fashion. They (the fast bowlers) were quite happy to go on but I told them, boss, there's a Test series coming up, so they have to look after themselves. I have to step in and draw the line to say there are other bowlers as well. Magnificent from them (the bowlers). (On his own form) I'm happy. In the last five games, I've kept my approach quite similar. I want to try and put pressure on the bowler. The big score isn't coming but I'm happy with the way things are going. The big score is around the corner.

Tom Latham (New Zealand captain): (Where did it go wrong? Obviously batting up top, it wasn't our finest day unfortunately. India put the ball in the right areas for a long period of time, pretty much gave up nothing. One of those days where everything you do doesn't work out. Full credit to India. It did a little bit. A bit of tennis ball bounce. To be five down for not many, you have to do a lot of hard work to get back into the game. We tried hard but we couldn't. Every game you want to put a great performance on the board. Wherever you play in the world it's not easy. We weren't able to adapt today.

Shubman Gill: This was a good opportunity for me to spend some time in the middle. Happy to be not out in the end. (How the surface played) There was a little bit for the fast bowlers. Honestly, we expected a bit more after the first innings but much didn't happen after 4-5 overs. There was something there for the spinners, for sure with Santner and Bracewell bowling. (Batting alongside Rohit Sharma) It's always a pleasure batting alongside Rohit bhai and Virat bhai. Watching them play the shots I've watched as a kid is always a great feeling. (Batting with Kishan) Me and Ishan are best mates in the team. It's always nice when he comes on the field, we have a good laugh together. We're always spending time together off the field and it's always nice when we get to spend time on the field too.

All roads in Raipur led to the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium. Little would they have envisioned a finish as quick as this, especially on the back of that humdinger in Hyderabad. With India romping home in grand style though, they're not going to complain one bit alright.

The damage was done the moment New Zealand were reduced to 15/5. It was a quicksand they could never get out of and their bowlers could only do so much with a measly 108 runs to play with. There was some swing upfront and Rohit Sharma looked a little tentative in the opening over with Lockie Ferguson firing rockets. But it was just an aberration before the Hitman masterclass was to unleash itself.

Drool-worthy strokeplay is what one associates with the Indian skipper and the crowd in Raipur got their money's worth. He looked in sublime touch and raced along to a fine half-century, even as Shubman Gill was solid, even if not the most fluent, at the other end. It was just an apt summary of the game in general - everything India touched turned into gold and when it went bad, it went awfully bad for the Kiwis.

They did have a couple of moments to savor in the form of the wickets of the big fish, Rohit and Virat Kohli. While Henry Shipley got one to jag back in and keep low to trap the former in front, Santner got one to spin past Kohli's outside edge to have him stumped. Blair Tickner bowled really well too without the reward to show for it. But in the end, it was all a case of going through the formalities - New Zealand just didn't stand a chance with that score at their disposal and India sauntered home with plenty of time to spare. Hang around for the presentation...

And that's how you do it! A stamp of dominance and that's what India have been today - dominant. From start to finish. And the hosts wrap up the series with a game to spare. What a performance!

It may not affect India in terms of the context of this series, but twin dismissals to left-arm spin are a cause for concern for Kohli heading into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
