Kuldeep Yadav doing well and picking up wickets is always going to hold India in good stead. They need a wicket-taker in the middle-overs and Kuldeep performing at his best is just what they need heading into that 50-over World Cup. A game that India would have wanted to win with more conviction but as Rohit Sharma said, this will help them and give them a lot of teachings for the long run. The series is wrapped up and it remains to be seen if they ring in the changes ahead of the final game in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. As for Sri Lanka, they would want to avoid a whitewash and show that they mean business in this format in a World Cup year. There surely remain a lot of issues to sort out with the bat and while Nuwanidu Fernando's display on debut was a big positive, some of the more experienced names simply must stand up to be counted.

Speaking of Kuldeep Yadav, he's the Player of the Match for his fine spell of 3/51. Here's what he has to say: I am very happy with my performances. When I get an opportunity, I try to do my best. I just want to bowl in the right areas. When you play, you have to focus a lot. I try to do well and whatever matches there have been, I have enjoyed my bowling. The team combination matters. I don't have a problem with that (not playing) - whenever I get a chance I try to do my best. You can't keep playing in the same areas. Hasaranga plays spin really well and the batters have no option when there are wickets falling. I always focus on practicing my batting in the nets. Over the last one year I've worked very hard. It's tough to bowl 10 overs due to my aggressive rhythm. (On his friendship with Yuzvendra Chahal) His support has always been there. He played the T20s and the last ODI so he told me about what the batters were trying to do.

Rohit Sharma (India captain): I thought it was a close game but having games like these teaches you a lot. We had to scrap and build an innings under pressure. It's something that we've been speaking about for a while now. KL has been batting at 5 for a long time now. It gives us the depth with experienced batters batting at 5 and 6. It gives us the confidence to bat freely at the top of the order as well. Both of them (KL and Hardik) have got a lot of experience of batting under pressure. In hindsight, yes it will be nice to have a left-hander. But again I don't believe too much in it because the guys who are given a chance at the moment have got a lot of runs behind them playing for the last year or so. A lot of us didn't play ODIs the last year. Ideally we would like to have a left-hander but we know the quality of the right-handed batters out there in the middle. It is something we are quite comfortable with at the moment. We haven't thought about it (changes) yet. Once we get to Trivandrum, we'll have a look at the pitch. We'll definitely have a look at some of the guys. There are three ODIs coming against New Zealand as well so we have to keep the guys fresh. (On Kuldeep) For him to come back and play the game he played today was fantastic. He brought us back into the game. Kusal and Fernando were batting really well and Kuldeep as we've seen so often found his way through. He's a very confident bowler right now and it definitely augurs well for the team.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): We were there in the game till the end, not enough runs on the board and hence we lost the game. At the start, we discussed, it was a flat deck, with the kind of start we got, we were eying 300 but Kuldeep bowled brilliantly in the middle phase. Especially in these conditions, batters not getting starts is a big concern. We had a chance, the ball was moving, I told my seamers to stick to the basics and move the ball within the stump line.

KL Rahul: Won't say it was a flat wicket, can't say it was doing a lot, quite a sporty wicket as I kept on this wicket too and 220 on this wicket was good for us, spongy bounce from the back of a length, we thought 280 or 290 we would chase it down but I thought the bowlers did a commendable job, they made our life easier. Sri Lanka put up a fight initially, put us under pressure, good partnership with Shreyas, Hardik and Axar, challenging game and be proud the way we fought till the end, just pleasing to finish things off. (On how different the situation was compared to the first game) We were batting first in Guwahati, openers put the pressure on them and tried to get the extra 20-25 runs, took the bowlers on and always thinking to attack and bowlers often read the mind of the batter, when I went into bat last game, we were in a comfortable position and allowed myself to took the bowlers on, it was a different game today, important to soak in the pressure, see that the bowlers don't get into it and kill the game for us. (On batting at number 5) One thing I really enjoyed batting at number 5 is I don't have to rush back in, have some time to come back and assess the situation of the game and allow myself bat with the situation demands, if you can read that and you more often do the job for the team. Rohit's pretty clear on where he wants me to bat, I try and do my job.

Sri Lanka's bowlers gave it absolutely everything. They showed that fighting spirit archetypal of their team but eventually, the lack of enough runs told on them towards the end. Even 50 runs more would have spiced this contest brilliantly but an appalling collapse meant that they had only 215 runs to play with.

A number of freebies in the first four overs seemed to indicate that India would get the job done in a canter. More so, with both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill off the blocks in a trice. Soft dismissals on their part brought the game to life though with Lahiru Kumara and Chamika Karunaratne posing questions aplenty by getting the ball to seam around. Virat Kohli looked to take his time but was castled by a sharp in-decker, leaving the game firmly in the balance.

Shreyas Iyer was positive from the outset but played all around a straight one which he would have flicked to the fence on most days. That brought two good friends, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya together, as they went about absorbing the pressure and playing the situation without getting carried away. Having treated Wanindu Hasaranga's overs with utmost respect, they tapped the ball around and rotated strike to get a stand going.

There was a period of 10.1 overs without a boundary but Pandya then started to flex his arms with some delectable strokes. Rahul continued to motor along too but the game sprung to life again when Pandya wafted at a harmless delivery and nicked behind. Axar Patel came out looking really confident again, but he perished to a stroke he would not want to look back at, picking out long off to perfection.

Dhananjaya de Silva might have dismissed Axar, but Dasun Shanaka simply had to bowl his frontline pacers a lot earlier. Eventually, that was the last roll of the dice but Kuldeep Yadav hung around and even unleashed a fabulous slash over backward point with Rahul notching up a mature half-century at the other end. Fittingly, Kuldeep hit the winning runs having started it off himself with the ball and India have started 2023 on the right note in the ODI format. Stick around for the presentation...

And that is that! India were stretched, but they've managed to hold on and take the series with a game to spare. Eden Gardens roars in delight as they see the Men in Blue wrap things up!

Kumara pulls out of his run-up. Don't worry though - Rahul's bat was firmly grounded at the non-striker's end.

Given runs off the blade and in rather poetic fashion, Kuldeep has the chance to hit the winning runs, having orchestrated Sri Lanka's batting collapse earlier. India need just 1 run to clinch the series!
