Along expected lines, India took a resounding 1-0 lead on Saturday. But it wasn't before Ireland pushed them and produced a couple of opportunities that kept them in the contest at the Niranjan Shah Stadium.
In many ways, that is something India will want for they need to be tested enough as they build towards the World Cup later this year. Irish skipper Gaby Lewis produced a valiant 92 with Leah Paul's 59 giving her the kind of support she was after once the visitors were reduced to 56/4. Later, Aimee Maguire got past both Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues in quick succession to put Ireland in the contest although things went kaput thereafter.
That Ireland posted a decent total of 238 would have pleased them considering the situation they found themselves in. It led to stand-in India skipper Smriti Mandhana declare that the hosts had to keep that total down to the 180-mark. That is quite a positive for the Irish to take as they look to better that performance and pull off a famous upset on Sunday.
If that is to transpire, a lot will come down to how all-rounder Orla Prendergast rises to the occasion. Having been stumped for just nine runs on Friday and gone wicketless with the ball, a fresh beginning is what the star all-rounder will be after in the second one-dayer. The experienced Laura Delany endured a shocker of an outing herself, getting out first ball before bowling all over the place and being whipped out of the attack after consecutive beamers. It wouldn't be wrong to suggest that her little spell handed the momentum back to India and while she also went off the field with an injury concern, Ireland will hope that she can put it behind her and turn up on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Sarah Forbes would want to forge a solid opening partnership with her captain while Christina Coulter Reilly will have her part to play later in the innings. Maguire, who bagged three wickets in the opener, holds the key again alongside Freya Sargent while all-rounder Arlene Kelly will be keen to build on a decent first outing.
India start favorites yet again, of that there is little doubt. But their fielding came under intense scrutiny yet again and they simply have to find a way to tidy up on that front. The bowlers did a fine job overall with Priya Mishra being the standout performer. Saima Thakor turned in an economical spell while debutant Sayali Sathgare made a decent first impression of her own.
As for the batting, Pratika Rawal and Tejal Hasabnis continued to show why they could be the future flagbearers of this team. Of course, Mandhana set the ball running with a breezy 29-ball 41 and in order to ease the load on the much more inexperienced Rawal, expect her to do the same. Rodrigues, on the other hand, will want to be wise with her shot selection even as she looks to put pressure back on the bowlers having stepped out to end deceived in flight on Saturday. And then there's Richa Ghosh - a match-winner par excellence on her day.
Clearly, it's a big task on hand for Ireland. But if they can win the big moments and sustain pressure on India, they could just make life tougher for the hosts. Whether it transpires or not is something that remains to be seen. But as long as they believe, they surely could fancy realistic chances of upsetting the Indian apple-cart!
