Commentary

And so, we come to the end of our coverage of the White Ferns' tour of India. Having come off a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, India resume their path to the biggest Women's Cricketing event in 2025 on a great note - we had three new names in the Indian set-up. all of whom have shown promise throughout the series, and it ended with the India vice-captain registering a much-needed hundred of her own. The Indian team management will desperately look to keep this momentum going forward - they have a testing 3-match ODI series against Australia in a month and a half's time. New Zealand, crowned champions in the shortest format a week and a half ago, will take heart from their win in the 2nd ODI this series - after a break, they will come together for an ODI series against Australia in December as well, albeit at home. Deepti Sharma has been adjudged the Player Of The Series! Here's what she has to say: Enjoy a lot in the ground (on smiling at the cricket) keeps me away from the pressure. That's how I express myself - enjoying my game. I had belief in myself and the team after the second game - those games come once in a while, but you have to come back in all three departments. Had the belief I could do that, had the faith, and so, I fared better today. The wicket was skidding at times, as a bowler you need to vary pace, and keep in mind the batter in front of you. Varied my pace accordingly today. We'll keep the preparations and mindset the same for the upcoming matches and hope to keep this up.

Harmanpreet Kaur [India captain]: We discussed a lot of things, happy that we executed a lot of them today. Whenever we play we always want to give a hundred percent, things don't go the way you want all the time, but as a cricketer you've got to keep pushing, thinking what your job and role is. We discussed all that, even though we lost the previous game we had the belief we could pull things back. Really happy with the result. I should give credit to Smriti, she was struggling a bit, this innings was really crucial for us because we needed the series win. We talked about taking the game deep when I walked in, keep doing the right things again and again, happy with the partnership. I'm always talking about our fielding, as a team we have to keep working hard. We are, just waiting for when we are the best fielding side.

Smriti Mandhana has been adjudged Player Of The Match for her 122-ball hundred! Here's what she has to say: Really pleased to get the series win. It's been a tough month and a half for this team. The first two matches didn't go my way, got out for single digits, pumped up to get the hundred for the team. It was more to control my shots today, you don't bat every day the same day. You need to get runs for the team regardless, there were few balls in the first six to seven overs that were boundary balls, but I had to be a little hard on myself. Tell myself to let it go, let the first 10 overs to finish and take the game forward. Sometimes the harder way works for me, you're playing a team sport. The thought of letting my team down makes it difficult for me to get to sleep, just getting up the next day and doing the same thing works for me too. Gets hard to do so, but as a cricketer, you're going to get highs and lows, but need to keep the hard work going.

Sophie Devine [New Zealand Women]: "I am incredibly proud of the group. We are down to 12 players. We lost players to injury. We have been on the road for seven weeks and we come to a country where conditions are as foreign as they get. Obviously we wanted a different result today. But incredibly proud of the way they fought. Brooke Halliday fighting dehydration, Lea Tahuhu was on one leg. The idea was to bowl wicket to wicket, it is the same blueprint from the World Cup. We know it is effective in these conditions. The wicket probably slid on a bit with the dew coming on in the evening."

Yastika Bhatia [India Women]: "There is always pressure when you play for the country. The communication was to take some time. When you stay on the wicket, things become easy after a while. I was looking to play my shots but at the same time also making sure that we don't lose a wicket. We knew if we take it deep, as the dew comes it will become easier to bat. The ball was turning when we were bowling. It definitely eased out a bit. I have put in a lot of hard-work and I am happy that my wicket-keeping is coming good."

P Srinivaslu: "Hats off to the women in blue, so early they adopted to 50 overs cricket. This is called cricket. Always bleed blue for WOMEN."

A clinical batting performance sees India through to a series win over the White Ferns. On a wicket which seemed dicey at times, with the ball sticking before coming onto the bat, Smriti Mandhana, Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur showed tremendous application, navigating India through the crucial stages of the chase without breaking much sweat. Mandhana led the way with her 8th ODI hundred, going past Mithali Raj in the list of most hundreds by a woman in ODI cricket.

Mandhana started off really cautiously, barely playing a shot to anything outside off stump. Shafali Verma started briskly, picking the gaps on a couple of occasions before being strangled down the leg side by Hannah Rowe. Yastika Bhatia joined Mandhana, and the duo weathered the situation as Sophie Devine turned to her off-spin resources, and helped India pile up 40 in the 10-over powerplay.

Yastika decided to play her shots at times. She took a bit of risk while at it, but it paid off for the wicket-keeper. She was looking in good nick, but was done in by a delivery from Devine that held up a bit and offered a simple catch back to the bowler. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur walked in, and the frequency of runs between the wickets increased gradually. Both Mandhana and Harmanpreet did a great job in pinching those ones and twos, and once the odd bad ball came along, the boundaries came with it.

The partnership kept growing, personal milestones came along for Harmanpreet and Mandhana, and the White Ferns just weren't able to find a way to break through and get back in the game. By the time they broke the third wicket stand, India needed a mere 23 with 9.5 overs still to play. Jemimah Rodrigues got India to the brink with a few well-timed strokes, but fell at the brink of victory. Fittingly, it was the skipper who hit the winning runs, sealing the game and series. Presentations to come in a short while...

8:35 P.M. IST: Took a while for the formalities to be completed, but India get the job done with a lot of time to spare. The wickets did come along for the White Ferns, but they came far, far too late for their liking.

44.2 Sophie Devine to Harmanpreet Kaur, THIS TIME IT IS THROUGH!!! A half-volley outside off and Kaur drove it away to the right of the fielder this time. It goes on to hit the boundary cushions and India win the series 2-1.
