That concludes our coverage of this first T20I but the two teams will return to The Village in Malahide for the second contest on Sunday, August 20. Do join us for our coverage of that right here on Sportskeeda while keeping yourselves updated with all the other cricketing news and action from around the world on this very platform. For the moment, this is the duo of Shashwat Kumar and Sooryanarayanan Sesha taking your leave. Thank you so much for joining us and being a patient audience throughout the rain break in particular. See you around soon - good night and have a great weekend ahead!
So there you have it - a rain-affected encounter is something we saw coming unfortunately. But we do have a result and India keep their unblemished record against Ireland intact. The hosts have work to do with the bat but will be very pleased with how Barry McCarthy and Curtis Campher performed before Craig Young broke the game open with the ball.
As for India, the return of Messrs Bumrah and Prasidh will please them to no end, as will their performances. Some areas to work upon for this young outfit and they'll want to iron out whatever flaws they saw surface today before the next game at this very venue on Sunday.
Back in style and he walks away with the Player of the Match honors. Easy game, isn't it? Not been an easy route back for Jasprit Bumrah but he sure didn't miss a beat today. Here's something to read into in that regard!👇
India's captain Jasprit Bumrah is the Player of the Match for his spell of 2/24. Here's what he has to say: Felt very good. So many sessions I did at the NCA and a lot of practice games. Didn't feel like I missed out a lot or was doing something new. Credit to the staff there for the work and they kept me in good spirits. It sometimes works in your favor that you're looking after others and it takes care of itself. Not really nervous but very happy. There was some swing upfront so we wanted to use it. Luckily we won the toss and it was coming out fine. You'll always search for a perfect game. They played well, credit to them - they came back well after a crisis. Credit where due but there's always areas of improvement so we'll keep that in mind. Everybody's quite eager to get game time and quite confident about their game. I think the IPL also helps. They're all very well prepared. The bunch that we have is really good. (On the support) It's always good - wherever we go we get a lot of support.
Barry McCarthy: Always nice to contribute to the team. Disappointing we didn't get over the line. We knew we had to get a score on the board. We were just reinforcing ourselves to stay in good positions and stay positive. In the second innings there was a little bit in the wicket. It's important to take the game to the opposition. It's always nice to contribute to the team.
Time for the post-match presentation...
It was a scratchy innings today from Yashasvi Jaiswal - one that you don't often associate with him. Here's how fans reacted to his stay in the middle!👇
Match Summary: India beat Ireland by 2 runs (DLS) to take a 1-0 series lead.
Yashasvi Jaiswal 24 (23) | Ravi Bishnoi 2/23 (4) Barry McCarthy 51* (33) | Craig Young 2/2 (0.5)
It just seemed inevitable given how it was hosing down without any signs of a stoppage. Ireland definitely fought hard and looked to make a match of it but the rain interruption came at an untimely juncture from their point of view. That doesn't take anything away from a superb Indian bowling display however, with Barry McCarthy's unbeaten 51 being a major reason behind Ireland getting as much as 139.
Yashasvi Jaiswal began in positive fashion and came out with intent archetypal of his approach. He slowed down thereafter though as the seamers extracted steep bounce off the surface to tuck him up. Ruturaj Gaikwad timed the ball crisply at his end although he nearly found himself run out after a shambolic miscommunication with his partner. Both openers took a steady route although they did well to cash in on anything loose.
Conditions weren't very easy to bat on against the new ball with the Irish bowlers extracting some movement and bounce. Jaiswal looked to break free and unshackle himself but perished in the process before Tilak Varma was strangled down the leg-side off his first ball with Craig Young wreaking havoc at the conclusion of the powerplay. The onus was on Gaikwad and Sanju Samson to steady the ship thereon but that's when the heavens opened up with India marginally ahead on DLS.
One hoped that it would be no more than a passing shower. More so with Gaikwad batting as well as he was at that point before his rhythm was disrupted. With the rain just not relenting though, the inevitable was not far away and the umpires have had to pull the shutters down on this contest. India won't mind as they take a 1-0 lead and kickstart the series on a winning note. The comebacks of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna will please them even further though as the duo announced their return with a bang.
18:13 local time, 22:43 IST: Handshakes - the umpires have called time on the contest with the weather just not relenting. India take a 1-0 series lead with a 2-run victory via DLS.
Insert the Cornelius Fudge gif "he's back!" - Jasprit Bumrah was back with a bang and fans simply couldn't hold their emotions back at the sight of India's talisman doing what he does best after a long injury layoff. Here's a read into some of the reactions!👇
18:03 local time, 22:33 IST: Nothing new to add except that the covers remain in place and the drizzle is still on. Not a bad weather for some music while we wait for a better update. 'Varman's playlist' isn't a bad way to start is it? No spoilers - IYKYK!
Arshdeep Singh's woes at the death continued today as Barry McCarthy tore into his final over and carted him all around the park. Fans were disappointed with the left-arm seamer's display - here's a look at the reactions!👇
Prasidh Krishna is by the boundary ropes for an interview. Here's what he has to say: I've been around for quite a long time now so it didn't really feel like a debut. It was nice and cold out there. Tough for the bowlers to warm up but it was nice to be out there. It was a little difficult (the injury layoff) but the people around me, the support staff back home, family and friends helped me. It was a happy journey back to be honest. (On the bowling performance) We were there for most parts of it. We could have finished a little better. For me personally it's great to be running in and bowling.
17:47 local time, 22:17 IST: Seems like the rain has gotten heavier now. Not the kind of news we wanted to hear but let's hope for the best folks. Keep those fingers crossed!
17:27 local time, 21:57 IST: The covers are firmly in place and we can't deny that we saw this coming. Fortunate perhaps that it didn't come much earlier and cast a question mark over the possibility of a result today. Ireland need to get back onto the park at the earliest given that India are ahead of the DLS par score by 2 runs. Wonder if this rain break will disrupt Gaikwad's momentum though once the resumption is on. If at all it's on of course and we certainly hope that is the case - fingers crossed!
The groundsmen are ready to spring into action. And their time has come - off go the players with the rain getting heavier!
