Phew! This tournament keeps delivering alright. It's entertainment personified and one after another, we keep getting these incredible games packed by an equally fantastic atmosphere. The Joburg Super Kings are finally off the mark and they will hope that they can get onto a nice winning run that will see them peak at the right time. As for the Capitals, it's now their third defeat in four games and having sunk to the bottom of the table, they have some serious catch-up to do.
Who else but Donovan Ferreira as today's Player of the Match. Here's what he has to say: To do it in front of our home crowd when we needed it was extra special. I just try and stand still, I've fortunately got quick hands. Nice bats to go with it. Myself and Mo said that if we're there at the end we're going to get the runs easily. I just told him we need to look at both sides of the wicket since there was a shorter side. And sometimes as a batter you get caught up. We're really grateful for all the support that came our way today. The atmosphere was fantastic.
A smiling Faf du Plessis (Joburg Super Kings captain): The team needed it. The atmosphere was of course very important. Our bowlers did a great job, our fielding was unbelievable. There were some nervous bodies and minds but it was a great partnership. Just one partnership to settle the nerves and the boys played beautifully. Donovan has got that potential, he's a great ball striker. Tonight's a good one for him to build upon. It wasn't just slogging in the beginning, there was temperament, there was a game plan. With power like that you can catch up. We spoke about it after the previous game on not sitting back and waiting for things to change. We needed to throw that first punch and change things around. Especially this team are very dependent on the top two (Jacks and Salt), they're such brilliant players. We needed it. This game is probably 90 per cent confidence and that is what we'll take from tonight. Still a lot of hard work to do, still a lot of areas to work upon but we'll take this confidence. We know that Donovan can hit a serious big ball but I think that shot from Mo was a serious pick up. And it was a real moment. I thought Rashid was going to bowl that over and there was a bit of extra nerve in the dressing room but the extra pace came on and we broke the shackles.
Wayne Parnell (Pretoria Capitals captain): We were in a very fortunate position where we can thank people. Special crowd again but obviously disappointing losing. I knew it (boundary percentage) was very low but I felt we got something that was defendable. The way Ferreira struck it and all the experience in their team, I think that was the difference. You can't ponder on it too much since you're playing in two days' time. We're taking on the Sunrisers next. Just look at the basic errors and refresh again.
Match summary:
Joburg Super Kings win by 6 wickets with 12 balls to spare
Donavon Ferreira 56*(20) | Lizaad Williams 3/26 (4) Kyle Verreynne 72*(52) | Will Jacks 2/26 (4)
It's games like these that hand a struggling side with a lease of life! Faf du Plessis mentioned the need of momentum going forward in the competition - Donavon Ferreira handed them quite a lot of it - The Super Kings needed 63 off the last six, but as it turned out, the duo of Donavon Ferreira and Moeen Ali needed just four overs to get the job done!
It was the 16th over from Neesham which saw the tide turn. He looked to vary his pace, but his lengths were all over the place. All that the Super Kings needed was some impetus going into the last five, and they got that right then! The following over from Hardus Viljoen saw a couple of the biggest sixes being hit - Moeen cleared the roof at deep backward square, Ferreira then smashed one 106 meters towards long on, and with 22 coming off it, the target was down to under a run-a-ball already!
Earlier, Wayne Parnell took a gamble in the powerplay by operating with Will Jacks, and it paid off richly. Faf du Plessis played all around a straight one three balls into Jacks' first over, and his opening partner Reeza Hendricks departed the following over, slogging at a loopy one outside off and losing his off pole. Sibonelo Makhanya had a big task at hand on debut, and he seemed to do all right!
Makhanya, along with Leus du Plooy, provided the Super Kings with some much-needed stability with some truly engrossing stroke-play. While du Plooy relied more on brute force, Makhanya timed the ball to great effect. The duo put on 70 for the 3rd wicket before both of them departed in quick succession. The required rate began inflating after the departure of the two, but the game turned on its head right after the 15th over.
A thoroughly deserving victory, this for the Joburg Super Kings, the crowd, right behind the home team all game, got their money's worth, and were finally able to witness their side register a win! Stay tuned for the presentations...
