Commentary

So that concludes the coverage of a rather frustrating contest. You might wonder what the coverage was about. It had more to do with covering the 22-yard strip than the game which lasted all of 77 legal deliveries but then, it is what it is. You've been a very patient audience over the last few hours and we can't thank you enough for hanging around with us. Of course, there's a lot of cricketing action lined up with Sri Lanka playing Afghanistan in the 2nd ODI and that'll commence in just over an hour and a half from now. A triple-header is lined up at the Abu Dhabi T10 League as well so do stick around for our coverage of those contests here on Sportskeeda. Nice to get into the minds of the two captains and the thought processes of their respective teams. Especially after a long day such as this. India will be pleased with the way Gill and Suryakumar batted but they know that they can't win the series now. At best, they can share the spoils on Wednesday when the party moves to the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The forecast looks dicey there as well from what we're hearing but let's hope that it all clears up and we have a full contest there.

Shikhar Dhawan (India Captain): (Frustrating?) It's not in our control. You just have to wait to get the game started. Now looking forward to the next game. When I walked out before the toss I thought it'll will seam more than the last match but it played better. It was delightful to see the intent from the batters. (Reasons behind the changes today) We wanted the sixth bowler to come in so that's why we dropped Sanju Samson and got in Deepak Hooda. With Deepak Chahar, we wanted to try him as well this series. He swings the new ball as well and we wanted one more swing bowler who can swing it both ways. We have players resting and some youngsters as well. It shows the depth we have in the side. We're confident about the boys. (How much energy do the youngsters bring?) It's that exciting that it makes me feel more young (laughs). I must say it's such a good exposure for them to come and play in New Zealand or even in West Indies. They've been performing so well. Young boys like Shubman, the way he's been batting and scoring runs. Even Umran Malik in the last game. It's great to see the maturity they're gathering at a quick pace. We are a process-oriented team and we'll make sure we show strong intent out there and give our best (in the last game). We know if the process is right the result will come our way.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): Obviously a bit disapponting. The weather seems to be following us around a bit. Probably did well to get as much cricket as we did today. (On the last game) A good team performance with some fantastic contributions. Tommy Latham played a fantastic knock and that was a nice start for us before we go to Christchurch now. (On being the top-ranked ODI side) Rankings just sort of float around a little bit. It recognizes some of the hard work going into the side and the cricket that is being played. But at the same time you try to focus on the series on hand. You just keep focusing on what you can control. (On that partnership with Latham last game) It was a nice partnership. Reasonably important in the context of the match. Was great watching Tommy flick a switch. Every time we go out it's an attempt to go out and try and do what the team requires. The last game was a good team effort. (On Tim Southee's longevity) An amazing player for us in all formats. We're celebrating a number of milestones almost every week which speaks volumes of the quality he has brought over the years. It's always nice to celebrate those and recognize them because not many people have achieved what he has.

There was a long wait, a really long wait, after the first rain interruption. Finally, play resumed and carried on for another 8 overs. The action was heating up, both Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav were in the mood to score plenty of runs. The New Zealand bowlers were conjuring up their own plans to stop them. But then, the heavens opened up for the second time, not to stop anymore! The umpires had no choice but to call the game off.

India walked out to bat after being inserted under overcast skies, but unlike the last game, they were intent on getting on with it and were keen on scoring runs. Shubman Gill looked in fine touch, his one-day game has gone to another level of late! Some stunning shots off the back foot and decisive footwork overall made it look effortless when be batted out in the middle.

Suryakumar Yadav, once again, impressed with his spectacular stroke-play. His sweeps, on either side of the wicket and his ability to pepper the on-side, especially behind square, are perhaps unmatchable at the moment in international cricket.

Shikhar Dhawan could not quite get a move-on after the break, but the setting was perfect with positive cricket on show from both sides. Sadly, rain had other ideas.

The ground staff worked tirelessly to get the field ready for play, but rain had to stop for that. That did not happen unfortunately.

This now means that New Zealand cannot lose the series. India have to win the last ODI on Wednesday to level it and leave on a high. The weather again, will be something to watch out for.

As for records, Tim Southee, the New Zealand pacer with a whole lot of quality and experience, played his 150th one-day international today. Looking at him, it does not seem as though he is ageing one bit!

So from a rainy Seddon Park in Hamilton, that is all that we had as far as on-field cricketing activities are concerned.

8:05 PM local time (12:35 PM IST): Handshakes all around and that is that. The match has been called off! It was inevitable really given how it was hosing down. The groundstaff gave it everything and we must doff our hats off to them for their efforts. But alas, the weather has proved too strong for any sort of result despite the stop-start we've had. New Zealand will head into the final ODI in Christchurch with a 1-0 series lead!

Hrishikesh Kanitkar (Indian Batting Coach): I came here for the one-dayers (in 1998) and the Test team was already here. I joined at Hamilton and that day Rahul (Dravid) got a century in the second innings and he'd got a 190 in the first. It was a fabulous pitch. The same group of coaches, we did the South Africa series when they'd come to India recently. We've worked with these guys before and all of us work at the NCA. These guys keep coming there and we keep working together. (On the NCA) It's the National Cricket Academy that caters to all players, the junior levels as well as the seniors. All the camps are held at Bangalore at the NCA - the U19, India A and women's camps as well as the seniors. A lot of good work goes on there, (VVS) Laxman heads that over there. Because Rahul's not here with the team all of us have come here. (Adjusting to conditions) Apart from the normal things like the pitch and the weather conditions, the rain plays a major role as we're finding out. It's a bit challenging especially when you're batting but also as a bowling team, you slip a little bit more. Suddenly it gets a bit colder, the weather changes. These guys have played all over the world and are used to these things. It's a bit of a challenge as to how you prepare mentally. (On Suryakumar Yadav) We'd love to see 10 players like that (grins) but I don't think you can make players like that. Surya is an exception - what he does, very few batters will be able to do but he is an inspiration to batters all over the world to be unconventional. He practises that and he's done it as a child as well. He's developed those and has stuck with that. (On the youngsters getting a chance in the absence of Messrs Rohit, Kohli and Rahul) It's a fabulous opportunity that they're getting under foreign conditions. The New Zealand team is a very very good team. It's just ideal for anybody who is aspiring to be in the World Cup squad.

7:53 PM local time (12:23 PM IST): Nothing new to add. It's much the same at Seddon Park with the covers firmly in place. It's pelting down quite heavily now in fact. 'I don't think we're going to be starting anytime soon' quips Gaurav Kapur. We couldn't agree more. Dare we say the inevitable might be on the cards...
