Commentary

So the Kiwis go 1-0 up in a series exactly how they were expected to. South Africa didn't fold and showed patches of fight, exactly how they were expected to do too. It must have been an immense learning experience for them which they'd look to use and make it count in the next Test to push the hosts as far back under pressure as they can and who knows what might happen? For now, it's the pair of Rudransh and Soorya signing off for Sportskeeda, we'll see you soon in some other match, some other session, some other over because sport hardly ever stops here!

David Bedingham: Quite upset that I didn't score a 100 but quite proud how I went about it. We had practiced it (the short ball ploy_ because we know that Kiwis like to go with that. We had a practice session for it. The first over Matt Henry was bowling short, I was defending. I thought one might just pop up if I keep doing that and if we are so behind in the game, I might just as well make a play. This wicket is quite different to the one I played on against India. I like these ones more. It shows that we can compete if we get an extended run at this level. We can take a lot from Kane's innings. Ravindra as well. It was quite a big learning curve. I don't think we can emulate that. But if we can even do 10% of what Kane did it'd be a big thing.

Tim Southee (New Zealand captain): Yeah, pretty good performance on a pretty good surface. For the batters to settle up and the bowlers to finish things off is pretty pleasing. The guys had a great preparation, we knew they are a proud nation and would come out fighting. When you come to the Mount you expect it to be a bit different. Pleasing to see Mitchell Santner come back to his own and Rachin and Glenn also picked wickets, showing that spin did play a role. We'd enjoy this one. A lot of focus will be on how we prepare and go about the next Test at a venue where we haven't played in a long time.

Neil Brand (South Africa captain): Very deflating. Felt on Day 1 we were in the game there. If we took those chances we never know what could have happened but well played to a very good New Zealand team. Our patience was tested on this wicket. Guys got in and then got out which was disappointing. Back to the drawing board and hopefully we can compete more in the second Test. (Wickets falling soon after breaks) I saw the TV and those stats came up. Obviously disappointing to lose a wicket after the lunch break or drinks break. We've got to discuss about it and just be a bit more switched on with the bat. I don't think we need much motivation - the dressing room is learning a lot and we're rearing to get back into the game of cricket and give it our best shot in the second Test. (On his own six-fer) Obviously a massive honor doing that but ultimately my currency is runs and it's disappointing not to do that for the team.

Rachin Ravindra is the Player of the Match for his stunning 240 in the first innings. Here's what he has to say: Any capacity to contribute to a Test match win (is great). We all know how tough it is to play a Test for four or five days. Pleasing to get the job done. It would rate pretty highly just because of the time we spent out there and the partnerships we managed to put down. The first Test win I've been involved with while playing so that's always going to be special. (On his subdued celebrations, Kane Williamson's presence the reason?) Yeah he's the influence so I guess that's how it turned out (laughs). It's just the Kiwi way, we're all humble in the right way. Any time you contribute to a team especially in a win it makes you feel belonged. As long as you give your best and are training hard and working hard for the team you're always feeling that belonging.

India getting upsets, Australia getting upsets but there's one international team who absolutely hates being beaten by weaker teams and New Zealand have shown just why. When the gulf of quality is big, they make every inch of it count, in every department, in every innings, in every session, in every over. They ruled a loss out in the first innings itself by piling up 511 through big hundreds from Ravindra and Williamson against Brand's fighting and intriguing six-wicket haul.

The hosts then put up a complete team effort to land a killer blow to the visitors by bowling them out for 162. It just showed their adeptness in understanding their own conditions and the visitors looked like exactly what they were, a B team. They tried their best but the bounce and turn and especially the control was just too good. The Kiwis then had a bit of fun in the third innings to give their bowlers some rest by not enforcing the follow-on. Williamson became the fifth from his country to score twin hundreds in a Test despite continuously trying to get out in the second innings. South Africa needed to chase a massive and impossible 528 in the final innings.

They put up a fight through small partnerships, a few good 30s and especially that brilliant counter-attacking 80 from Bedingham where he took on a billion short balls and got away with at least a million of them. But Jamieson decided to show his range by getting two set batters at the start of the second session with swing and then the same at the start of the third session with extra bounce. Santner and Phillips then finished things off by cleaning up the tail without much fuss.
