Sadly we have reached the time when the umpires have no other choice to call the match off. A proper dampener for all the cricket fans and especially for the fans present in the stadium. They came out all guns blazing and was seen partying on the grass banks and on the stands despite rain playing spoilsport. We move to Durban tomorrow, a place where you dare to predict on the weather conditions. For us in the commentary box it was a wait for eternity but the duo of Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and Pradeep tried to be at your service all the time providing the latest update. 08:20 PM local time, 11:50 PM IST: Alright, it's official, the inevitable had to happen, the game has been called off due to rain. The incessant rain meant, we didn't get to see a single ball bowled and the game has been abandoned.

08:15 PM local time, 11:45 PM IST- Most of the covers have been removed but the cover on the pitch remains in place and a steady drizzle continues. We are not far away from the cut-off time. Things looking very bleak to be honest.

7:48 PM local time, 11:18 PM IST: The rain is back and so are the covers. The wait continues and hopefully we get a game but that looks highly unlikely at this moment. The cut off time for a five over game is just about an hour from now.

Hello and welcome to Sportskeeda's live coverage of the Match 1 of SA20 2024 edition as Sunrisers Eastern Cape are going head to head against Joburg Super Kings here in St George's Park, Gqeberha!

Right then. In no time, we're into another edition of SA20, the inaugural season of SA20 was a massive hit and the expectation, anticipation has doubled since then. Last season, we saw Sunrisers Eastern Cape winning their maiden title in the first season itself. Aiden Markram led side, finished third on the points table, but they peaked at the right time as they beat Joburg Super Kings in the semi-finals to face Pretoria Capitals in the finals. Aiden Markram in the end led them from the front with 366 runs and 11 wickets and led them to a title win as well.

As far as Joburg Super Kings are concerned, Faf du Plessis led side finished on the second spot with six wins of the ten games they played. Super Kings faced the same opposition that they are facing today but couldn't get over the line. They just couldn't stop Aiden Markram's onslaught who notched up a blistering hundred when it mattered the most. Reeza Hendricks was on the course to notch up a hundred too, but Super Kings just couldn't hit those big one's when it was needed the most.

If you look back at the inaugural edition of SA20, we saw plenty of local talent that made a mark and eventually getting selected to their national side which was a proud moment for many of them. We're going to see plenty more of that this time around with the last edition being an outstanding one.

It was a successful campaign nevertheless for Joburg Super Kings as Faf du Plessis showed them the way with the bat as he finished second overall for highest run getter of the competition. Leus du Plooy was another bright find from the last season, a lot is expected out of him this time. Gerlad Coetzee was a star with the ball for them in the last edition, he followed up with brilliant performances when he played for South Africa. Along with Coetzee, Nandre Burger was another bowler that impressed throughout and we saw him flourish against India just recently.

Talking about Sunrisers Eastern Cape's line-up, they have their skipper Aiden Markram who is a star himself. Along with him, they have Marco Jansen, the tall all-rounder and then Tristan Stubbs and Sisanda Magala who are expected to do well this season for them.

The defending champions start off as favourites, but Faf du Plessis led side know how to come out triumphant and this being the tournament opener, Super Kings would like to get off on a winning note and will be eager to go all the way this time.
