So that is that as far as this contest was concerned - a game that ended even before it could begin but we do have a double-header lined up tomorrow - the Stars play the Scorchers while the Thunder lock horns with the Strikers. Hopefully, the first of those will be on given all that has unravelled in the Stars camp thanks to a COVID outbreak - keep your eyes on this platform for all the updates pertaining to that clash, as well as plenty of other cricketing news and action from across the world here on Sportskeeda. We were awaiting to see the batters wield the willow wild and throw their bats around but alas, the only instance it happened was during the bat flip. A contest that promised a lot but alas, we'll never know how it could have transpired. You've got to feel for the crowd as well - it's a beautiful venue and it doesn't get to host too many games but it's just not to be tonight. Both the Renegades and the Sixers will now split points and get two apiece against their name. Hopefully the weather would be more relenting on January 9, when the Sixers lock horns with the Perth Scorchers at the same venue.

7:49 pm local time, 14:19 IST: The covers are being peeled off! The umpires were in discussion with the two captains and it seems like we do have a game on, folks.

Sam Harper: It's a little bit wet out here. Hopefully we can get on (soon). It's been the feature of this competition - the likes of Ben McDermott and Mitch Marsh, they're making the big contributions with the 80s and 90s so I should get there next. Under the lights it can be a bit of a struggle sometimes so it's about keeping it nice and simple. It looks like a really good crowd coming in so we need to get some cricket in for all of us. (On his preferred batting position) I don't have a preference but I'm happy to go down the other if required. Finch comes in at 3 - just a bit of juggling around with Maddo going out. We desperately need a win - fingers crossed that we can get something going.

Sean Abbott was interviewed by the broadcasters: (On the last game) Great win, I had to play a bit with the bat there. It was a difficult wicket and credit to the Heat whose bowlers bowled well and got their yorkers in. Great to get over the line. (On his recent batting form) Pretty fortunate, especially in Shield Cricket, to be given some opportunities with the bat. Felt really good with the bat and have been enjoying the contest. There's been a lot of close games and we've kept the same core group of players for a long time. There's a lot of experience in the group and we've come up in the tight games and the tough situations. (On the outfield) It's not too bad inside the ring - the outfield's a little damp though. We don't want to disappoint the crowd tonight so hopefully the rain stays away and we can have a good game out there.

7:30 pm local time, 2 pm IST: The covers umbrellas are out and the pitch covers are still on. The good news is that the rain doesn't seem to be too threatening at the moment. There are some damp patches in the outfield, which seem to be the reason for the hold-up. Looks quite promising though, as long as it doesn't rain again! Fingers crossed...

Right then. Both sides have been named along expected lines, with James Seymour returning to the Renegades XI to fill in for Nic Maddinson. As for the Sixers, they have brought a fit-again Steve O'Keefe for Lloyd Pope, although Jackson Bird has been named as one of their X-Factor substitutes. Great to see the experienced swing bowler back after an injury layoff but could he have been picked in the first XI considering he's a Powerplay specialist? Interesting move this...

Happy New Year folks! 2022 is upon us and the cricketing action has begun Down Under already. In the second of a New Year double header in the Big Bash League 2021-22, the defending champions Sydney Sixers lock horns against Melbourne Renegades at the beautiful International Sports Stadium in Coffs Harbour.

These are two teams that have been on opposite ends of the spectrum since...well, for quite a while. And that traverses to the two preceding seasons as well. One just knows how to win, the other continues to struggle in that regard and a quick glance at the points table is enough to suggest which team we are actually referring to on both these counts.

The Renegades' struggle for winning momentum has continued despite a lot more promise in patches this season. They would be desperately hoping that 2022 brings some much-needed good news for them. 2021 ended with the news of skipper Nic Maddinson being called up to Australia's Ashes squad and Kane Richardson will lead the side in the first game of the calendar year.

That said, their batting struggles require a certain Aaron Finch to resurrect it with his experience and panache up top. Jake Fraser-McGurk has shown flashes of promise, Mackenzie Harvey has looked solid and Sam Harper seems to be coming into his own at the right time. That said, Finch holds the aces for the Renegades who are also grappling with Mohammad Nabi's lack of impact across departments.

Despite being subjected to a Ben McDermott blitz in their last encounter, the bowling offers more hope for the Renegades. Reece Topley's return to form is a massive shot in the arm for a side that also boasts of James Pattinson and Richardson on the bowling front. Zahir Khan continues to remain their trump card and will be pivotal to the visitors' hopes of strangling the Sixers batting outfit.

To that end, the Renegades might want to open up a few scars from the Sixers' last game where they barely scraped through to a last-ball win against Brisbane Heat. A chase of 106 should have been a breeze in the park but the Sixers imploded to find themselves reeling at 47-8. It is a different thing altogether that Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis then dragged the team home.

If there happens to be a chance to send some nerves jangling amidst the Sixers batting outfit, it is tonight. That said, not for no reason are they the joint-most successful team in the competition, are they? The team just seems to find a way to win and their incredible batting depth continues to hold them in great stead.

Josh Philippe continues to look flamboyant at the top while James Vince hasn't quite lit up the competition in the manner he has done in seasons gone by. Skipper Moises Henriques and Dan Christian have looked the part though and Daniel Hughes has a half-century to his name, giving the side a polished look.

The bowling charge is led by Abbott and Dwarshuis, apart from Hayden Kerr being one of the breakout stars of the tournament. The arrival of Shadab Khan lends a world-class wicket-taking option to the defending champions while adding to the already well-balanced Sixers outfit.

Thus, we have in front of us, two teams that couldn't be more contrasting to one another in terms of fortune and recent form. Can a new year bring about a twist in the tale or will a similar story unravel?
