Commentary

And that's a wrap to this 3-match ODI series. New Zealand have claimed both T20I and ODI honors to cap off a successful tour of the Caribbean. It's been a pleasure bringing the coverage of the same to you here on Sportskeeda and we thank you for tuning in. Of course, do ensure to keep track of loads more cricketing action from around the globe, including the final contest between Zimbabwe and India in Harare that is set to commence in a few hours from now. Tom Latham goes ahead to collect the series trophy and that's a historic moment for the Blackcaps. Mind you, Latham has had to step into the skipper's shoes quite often in recent times with Kane Williamson's fitness issues continuing to pop up. But he has led the way with the willow and on the park to steer the Kiwis to a fine victory. As for the West Indies, they've shown some very workable elements yet again but they are far from being the finished product. They could have sealed the series last game as skipper Pooran mentioned but they let it slip by. They now have a couple of days off before 'The Sixty' as it forms the build-up towards the Caribbean Premier League commencing in a few days from now.

Tom Latham, New Zealand Captain and Player of the Match: It was nice to make a contribution. The partnership between myself and Daryl was able to put the pressure on them. Knew the target and I thought we managed plan it well. We didn't try to build those partnership in the first two ODIs. Devon and Guptill managed to do that today and Neesham with the icing on the cake in the end. Even though they were 170 odd for none, we knew they didn't get away. The bowling effort wasn't too bad. Plan is always to take early wickets but their openers were good. I thought they played very well, our boys toiled hard. It is always nice to come here and win. Teams have come in the past and it has been challenging. There is a lot of experience in the group and it was nice to get over the line. So, very happy.

Nicholas Pooran (West Indies Captain): Tough one. Scoring 300+ on that wicket I felt was really good. At the halfway stage I thought we were in the game but in saying that, I can't ask the bowlers to do any more than that to be honest. They got a couple of good partnerships and with dew coming in, the spinners found it tough to grip the ball. Even I had it in hand for the last ball and and it was tough to grip. We sat in the meeting this morning and we spoke about keeping a check on the game instead of giving them wickets. I think the opening partnership got us to a decent position but in saying that, New Zealand is the number 1 team in the world and they took advantage in good batting conditions. A bit of miscommunication in my catch as well - maybe that could have changed the game. I have no doubts in my mind that the more ODI cricket we play, the better we will get. It was really good (the knock from Mayers). The guys spoke about giving more respect to the bowlers and they came out and executed well. (Anything that they could have done different in the second half?) On reflection it's difficult - it was diffcult to grip the ball. Maybe we could have got more wickets in the Powerplay. Having said that, we had a chance to win the series in the second game and we let it go. We paid the price for that today. 1-1 coming into the third game, up for a fight and scoring 300+, I can't ask for more. The guys came out here and gave their 100 percent. It feels really nice to have the guys give their 100 percent. The guys are really tired as well - they have a couple of days' break now. They're young and I have no doubt that they are going to learn. This is a story and every story isn't easy at the start. But we'll continue to learn and trust our abilities and our process.

Mitchell Santner: Yeah it always nice to get such an award. Good to get the win. The conditions changed a lot. Tough in the second innings with a wetter ball. Looked like a pretty good track. The big boys did well to restrict the West Indian batters initially. Mayers, Shai Hope and Nicky P were very good in the first innings to take them to a good total. Our top-order set up the chase. I was pretty happy to go and finish it off (Laughs).

Clinical from start to finish - that's how you'd have to describe this chase by the Kiwis. 302 was a chase-able target with dew setting in and taking a heavy toll on the white Kookaburra and irrespective of whether it's in hindsight, Shai Hope laboring his way to a 100-ball 51 will have to be looked back at seriously with his crawl seeing the hosts leave at least 20 runs out on the park if not more.

Martin Guptill saved his best for the last, going about his business in smooth fashion. He forged a solid partnership in the company of Devon Conway as dew set in quite early to throw a spanner into the works of the hosts, despite the early wicket of Finn Allen. Guptill and Conway notched up their respective half-centuries but neither could convert it into a big one.

Alzarri Joseph returned to prize out Guptill before Conway was trapped in front by the guile of Yannic Cariah. That got skipper Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell to combine forces and it was that partnership that buried the contest for good to put the Kiwis on the ascendancy.

The hallmark of that 120-run stand was the manner in which both batters nudged the ball around and played very few dot deliveries. Latham notched up a fine half-century in another fine display in a run chase - we ought to take more note of him in this format alright! And just when the West Indies needed a breakthrough, Mitchell tore into Cariah to bring the asking rate down to a shade over a run-a-ball. Such was the impact of dew that the ball was changed a grand four times. None of it deterred the tempo of the Kiwi innings though.

Both batters departed in quick succession though to just leave the door slightly ajar for the Windies. But in the end, a blazing cameo by James Neesham rendered that hope moot, wrapping up a comprehensive victory for the Blackcaps who have now tasted ODI glory in the Caribbean for the very first time. This also brings West Indies' quota of games in the ICC ODI World Cup Super League to a close as they finish with 90 points and their fate now rests on other results if they are to secure direct qualification for the World Cup next year.
