First, the men's hockey team beat Argentina 3-1, then PV Sindhu progressed to the quarter-finals of women's singles badminton competition, then India's Atanu Das beat 2012 Olympic gold medallist Korea's Oh Jinhyek to reach the Round of 16. And now, Satish Kumar advances to the quarter-finals of men's super heavyweight category.

Satish Kumar becomes third Indian boxer to progress to quarter-finals

Following in the footsteps of the women, India's Satish Kumar has beaten Jamaica's Ricardo Brown to progress to the quarter-finals of the men's super heavyweight division. He won the contest by a split decision of 4-1.

Satish began the first round on a risky note, using his strong right hand to attack rather than defend. However, his plans paid dividends as he attracted the attention of all five judges to win the round.

The second round was a scrappy one as the referee halted play a lot of times. Satish was warned to keep his head up while Ricardo was warned to keep his fists closed. Four judges awarded the round to Satish while only one of them gave it to the Jamaican.

Knowing that preventing a knockout will see him through, Satish played smartly by evading the punches and maintaining distance. Ricardo's frustration got the better of him as he kept on boxing even after the final bell. Once again, four judges awarded the round to Satish Kumar while only one of them favored Ricardo.
