Satish Kumar is an Indian Amateur Boxer born on 4th May 1989. He hails from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. He represents India in super heavyweight (91kg) in international events.
Satish Kumar- Early Life, Family & Background
Satish Kumar belongs to a family of farmers. His father is a farmer who had four sons. Satish’s elder brother is serving in the Indian Army.
Satish wasn’t interested in sports nor did he have any knowledge about boxing. All he wanted to do is to serve in the Indian Army just like his elder brother. In 2008, he joined the Indian Army as a Sepoy and moved to Ranikhet, 300 kilometers from Bulandshahr. A year later, the coaches at the boxing camp spotted him because of his height of 6’2 feet and requested him to try his hands on boxing.
On the persuasion of the coaches, Satish decided to pursue boxing. He was picked by the coaches in the camp merely based on his height and his life began to change since the day he took up the sport.
Satish is married to Savita Kumar and has 2 children.
Satish Kumar Biography
Satish Kumar picked up the boxing gloves and trained at the age of 19. He eventually entered the boxing world at the age of 21. He was trained by the coaches in the boxing camp at the Kumaon Regiment.
In 2011, Satish Kumar won his first medal in boxing when he won the Silver medal in his national debut at the Senior National Boxing Championships held in Chennai.
In 2018, 2 years after missing out on his chance to represent India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Satish won his first international Gold medal at the Grand Prix Ustinad Labem in the Czech Republic, followed by a Silver medal at the India Open International Boxing held in New Delhi.
Satish Kumar Achievements
Satish Kumar made his international boxing debut for India at the 2013 World Championships. But, he lost in the quarterfinals of the 91kg Super Heavyweight after he was declared ‘unfit’ because of the cut above his right eye.
A year later, Satish won his first international medal by clinching a Bronze medal after he lost to Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko in the Super Heavyweight event semi-final at the 2014 Asian Games held in Icheon, South Korea. In 2015, Satish won another Bronze medal in Super Heavyweight at the Asian Boxing Championships held in Bangkok.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he shot to the limelight when he entered the final of the Super Heavyweight event and won a Silver medal after he lost to Frazer Clarke of England. At the 2019 Asian Boxing Championships, Satish again settled for the Bronze medal in the 91kg Super Heavyweight category.
Satish will mark his Olympics debut at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in July-August. He became the first Olympic boxer from India to compete in the 91kg Super Heavyweight Category after he won Asian Olympic Boxing Qualifiers by defeating Kazakhstan's Otgonbayer Daivii.
