Saurabh Chaudhary crashes out in 7th place in 10m Men's Air Pistol Final; Iran win gold medal

Right! What an entertaining final we have just witnessed. There were plenty of ebbs and flows but there can be no denying that Javed Foroughi was the best shooter on display in the summit clash! He seemed insulated from the pressure and produced a performance for the ages. As far as Indian fans are concerned, they might be a touch dismayed at Saurabh Chaudhary's seventh-placed finish. Yet, that takes nothing away from the kind of displays the youngster has conjured up at this year's Olympic games!

Here's the final standings, after Saurabh Chaudhary crashed out early in a shock result

Javed Foroughi wins the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol men's event!

The Iranian caps off a dominant display by hitting another 10.1, whereas Mikec has to settle for the silver medal, having scored 8.8 in his final shot!

Mikec might only need to settle for the silver medal though, with Foroughi enjoying a 4.2 lead, which is a colossal lead in shooting terms. And, he betters it with a 10.5, while Mikec only hits 9.1

Foroughi has an enormous 4.2 point lead over Mikec! And, as long as the Iranian holds his nerve, he should find himself at the top of the medal's podium!

Yes he can! Mikec shoots 10.1 while Pang Wei can manage just 8.3!

A bronze medal for China's Pang Wei! Mikec Damir will face off against Iran's Javad Foroughi for the gold medal shots.

Pang Wei starts off with a 9.9 shot, and Mikec betters that with a 10.3 shot.

Mikec currently has a 0.6 lead, can he hold his nerve for a shot at the top two? He has been full value for his lead so far and he could well be on his way to a silver medal, at the very least!

Oooh, what's happened here! Ukranian Pavlo Korostylov has been knocked out of the competition with a poor 8.4 shot!

That shot from the Ukranian dropped him below Wei and Damir, and the Chinese lives to tell another tale!

The fight at the top is also getting closer by the minute. Pavlo Korostylov and Javed Foroughi are the contenders! The latter is comfortably in the lead at the moment! Hang on! Korostylov has fluffed his lines with a sub-standard shot and to everyone's surprise, he now finds himself out of the top three altogether!

Well! Mikec shoots 10.5 while Wei falters with just a 9.8 shot!

The two shooters are now level, and this is virtually a shoot-off.

And now Damir is the one under pressure, with China's Pang Wei in the lead.

Damir Mikec goes into 4th place with a total score of 179.3!

Germany's Christian Rietz has been eliminated in 5th place.

Reitz shoots 9.5, Mikec does way better with a 10.5 shot in their first outings. A massive 1.4 point lead for Mikec in the process!

German's Reitz will now battle against Serbia's Mikec Damir.

Damir currently has a 0.4 lead over Reitz. The latter blows his chances though, with a 9.5 and that could be that for the German at this year's Olympics!

Rietz moves ahead with a 10.4 shot, and Zhang has been eliminated!

China's Zhang Bowen finishes 6th. The German, on the other hand, keeps his calm! He still has plenty to do to ensure a medal though!

We have a tie! We will now go into a shootout between these two shooters!

Zhang and Christian are tied on 158.2, and we will have a single shot to decide who progresses. This is incredible! Two excellent shooters are going toe to toe and neither of them is giving the other an inch (both literally and metaphorically)

Now the elimination shootout is between Zhang B (147.5) and German Christian Rietz (147.4).

Saurabh gets only 9.6, and the Indian youngster has been ELIMINATED!

That is a massive shock, especially to those who have been following his meteoric rise! Nevertheless, an excellent display of courage and skill from Saurabh and at 19 years of age, you reckon he will only get better!

Right, time for the second shot now! Saurabh has a 0.3 lead, can he remain calm and get a bigger lead over the Chinese shooter?

Saurabh shoots 10.6 and gets a slender 0.3 lead over China's Zhang B! It seems that Saurabh has finally come to the party! Massive shot coming up though!

Saurabh is now fighting to stay in the competition with China's Zhang Bowen.

Saurabh takes the lead over Korea's Kim with a shot of 10.2! He remains in the competition for another round! Phew! That was close! But Saurabh lives to tell another tale and that is what probably matters in these clutch situations - the ability to keep yourself in the mix!

Saurabh is currently tied for last place with 107.0 to his name, that's a shocker! Kim - the Asian champion, is the shooter Saurabh is directly competing with for last spot!

Foroughi, Saurabh's biggest competition registers 9.8 while we wait for the youngster's shot.

After 10 shots, Saurabh has 96.8 to his name, and he's in 7th place. He needs two successive good shots to steer clear of 8th place and ensure that he isn't the first shooter to be eliminated in the final!

We're now into the second set of five shots, before the elimination rounds begin. Saurabh currently trails some of his biggest rivals, and the question is - Can the youngster step up at the biggest stage? He has done it in the past in various world events. Can he replicate the same at the Olympics? Well, that's the million dollar question!

Saurabh's on 47.7 at the moment, at the bottom of the pile at the end of the first 5 shots. There is still a bit of time to rectify it though. However, he will need to be at his best in the next five shots. If that doesn't happen, he will have an almighty mountain to climb when the second phase or the elimination phase begins!

Saurabh starts with 10.1 on his first shot! A fairly decent start for the Indian, who doesn't seem too perturbed by the occasion!

We are moments away from the start! Literally anything could happen! Saurabh Chaudhary takes a deep breath and personifies the archetypal calm before the storm! We can't wait!

Right! Excitement has hit fever pitch and Saurabh Chaudhary, who was simply brilliant during the qualification rounds, has a massive opportunity to break India's medal duck at this year's Olympics! Obviously, there is plenty of obstacles he has to still overcome but he has shown lately that he has all the ingredients to bring home India's second individual gold medal at the Olympics! How does the points system in the 10m Air Pistol men's event work?

Well, it's quite simple. Each of the 8 competitors in the summit clash will first shoot 10 shots (2 sets of 5 each).

After the initial round, shooters will be eliminated one after the other in two-shot periods. To put it simply, the shooter with the worst total after every two shots in the elimination period will bow out of the contest, until two shooters remain.

Between the two shooters, whichever shooter scores the highest in their next two shots clinches the gold medal!

India's 'Golden Boy' Saurabh Chaudhary topped the charts in the Qualifiers with a fabulous score of 586/600, and he remains on course to live up to all the hype of him being one of India's 'sure-shot' medal contenders.

Saurabh's been in some stellar medal-winning form in the recent past, having stepped onto the podium in the Shooting World Cups held in Osijek and New Delhi earlier this year.

While Saurabh aims to clinch his first-ever senior Olympics gold medal, he will need to stave off some serious competition and bring his cool temperament to the fore.

It's confirmed! Youth Olympic Champion will make quest for the senior Olympic title as well in the men's 10m air pistol event. Saurabh Chaudhary has finished atop the qualification stage with 586/600 points. He has a commendable 28x against his name too. His 6 series split up read - 95, 98, 98, 100, 98, 97. Abhishek Verma was a bit unfortunate to finish out of the top-8 bracket. He ended at the 17th place with 575/600 points. His 6 series read - 94, 96, 98, 97, 98, 92!
