Growing up in a family with two sisters and two brothers, Thompson embarked on his martial arts journey at a tender age under the guidance of his father, Ray Thompson. Ray himself is a kickboxer and the proud owner of Upstate Karate, a respected karate school in Simpsonville.

By the time Thompson turned 15, he was already engrossed in kickboxing and karate competitions. Over the years, he has attained black belt rankings in Tetsushin ryū Kempo, American Kickboxing, and Jujutsu. Furthermore, he honed his skills in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the guidance of Carlos Machado, who also happens to be his brother-in-law.

Stephen Thompson entered the UFC octagon on February 4th, 2012, at UFC 143, taking the place of the injured Mike Stumpf. Originally set to fight Justin Edwards, fate intervened once more as Edwards also got injured. As a result, Dan Stittgen was chosen as the replacement opponent to face Thompson.
