Umar Nurmagomedov comes from a family of prominent professional mixed martial arts athletes from Russia. He competes in the bantamweight division and is currently signed with the elite professional mixed martial arts promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Nurmagomedov started training under the tutelage of a famed combat sports trainer, the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, at the Eagles MMA. He started as an amateur and eventually transitioned into a professional in 2016.

Umar Nurmagomedov squared off against Rishat Kharisov in his first professional mixed martial arts outing at Fight Nights: Global 57 in a bantamweight bout. He finished the fight in the second round by clutching Kharisov in a guillotine choke, forcing him to tap, and started his professional career with a dominant win. Nurmagomedov made his way into the UFC on January 20, 2021, against Sergey Morozov at UFC Fight Night: Chiesa vs. Magny on January 20, 2021. He won the fight by a second-round technical submission and earned a Performance of the Night award for his performance. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the UFC men’s bantamweight rankings. Nurmagomedov is slated to lock horns against the reigning champion, Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311 on January 18, 2025, in a bantamweight showdown.
