Colby Covington is a professional mixed martial artist who competes in the welterweight division and is signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). A top competitor in the promotion, he won the interim welterweight title in 2018 by defeating Rafael Dos Anjos by unanimous decision. He was stripped of the interim championship due to an injury that required surgery.

The prominent welterweight competitor in the UFC, Colby Covington, appeared at the UFC 286 event as the back-up fighter for Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards’ welterweight title showdown. Edwards defended his belt for the first time ever since winning it from Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 by a dramatic head kick knockout in the last round. Colby Covington quickly inserted himself in the title contention by calling out Edwards. The welterweight champion initially downplayed Colby Covington for the title contention by claiming his inactivity in the octagon. Their bout finally took place at UFC 296 on December 16, 2023, as the main event of the last pay-per-view event of the UFC in 2023. Colby Covington came up short and ended up losing the bout via a unanimous decision.

Colby Covington College days

Colby Covington joined the Iowa Central Community College for a wrestling program and started competing as a wrestler. He won the 165-pound state championship in 2006 and after his win, he transferred to the wrestling program to the University of Iowa. A DUI incident resulting in his arrest led him to Oregon State University.

While at the Oregon State University, Colby Covington qualified for the NCAA tournament as a junior and then as a senior. Colby Covington completed his studies and is a certified graduate in bachelor’s of arts in sociology in 2011.
