Zhang Weili is a Chinese mixed martial artist who was born on August 13, 1989. She currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where she is the current UFC Women's Strawweight Champion.

Zhang has been a professional fighter since 2013, and prior to that, she was the Kunlun Fight Women's Strawweight Champion. She is currently second in the UFC women's pound-for-pound rankings as of August 2023.

For UFC Fight Night 157 on August 31, 2019, Zhang competed against Jéssica Andrade for the women's strawweight title. She won the match with a first-round technical knockout to win the strawweight title and become the first Chinese champion in UFC history.

In April 2021, at UFC 261, Zhang squared off against the former strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas. This was Zhang's second defense of her title. After being hit with a head kick early in the first round, she was knocked out of the fight.

On November 6, 2021, at UFC 268, a rematch between Zhang and Namajunas for the UFC Women's Strawweight Championship took place. After a close fight, Weili was defeated by a split decision.

She reclaimed the title at UFC 281 against then-champion Carla Esparza in November 2022. On August 19, 2023, Zhang Weili and Amanda Lemos squared off at UFC 292 for strawweight gold. Weili defended her title successfully by defeating Lemos by a unanimous decision. She took on Yan Xiaonan on April 13, 2024, at T-Mobile Arena, Nevada, Las Vegas, USA, at UFC 300 and successfully defended her strawweight strap by defeating Xiaonan via unanimous decision.

Where is Zhang Weili from?

Zhang was born in the Chinese province of Hebei. Her mother is a homemaker, and her father is a retired miner. She has one older brother who left his position as a gold trader to support Zhang's career and is now employed by the gym where she works out.

She was inspired by Kung Fu movies and began her martial arts training at the age of six with Shaolin Kung Fu under the guidance of a local master. She participated in a variety of sports in elementary school, including football, table tennis, and athletics. Her parents enrolled her in a specialized martial arts school in Handan when she was 12 years old, where she started training in Sanda and Shuai Jiao, a Chinese form of wrestling.

Weili was chosen for the Jiangsu province’s Sanda team after repeatedly winning the Sanda championships in Hebei, but a recurring back injury she suffered during training forced her to give up the sport.
