Due to the fact that the German tech tree is one of the largest in War Thunder, it is difficult to pick the best German tanks. These tanks in the game are equally loved and feared due to their intimidating presence on the battlefield. In true War Thunder fashion, each tank has detailed modules and is historically accurate to their real-life counterparts.

So, without further delay, let's take a look at the five best German tanks in this renowned vehicle combat MMO.

Which are the five best German tanks in War Thunder?

1) Sd.Kfz.234/2

The Sd.Kfz.234/2, or 'Puma', is a rank II, BR 3.7 light tank. It is lightly armored and just has a 50 mm cannon. Although it lacks both survivability and firepower, it is one of the favorites in War Thunder due to its extreme speed, agility, and ability to harass larger armored tanks.

It is better than most other tanks in its category at its BR and is extremely fun to play. Being a light tank, it has the ability to scout enemy targets for the team. In the hands of an experienced player, the Puma can go to higher tiers and still be able to cause chaos for the enemy team.

2) Tiger II (H)

The Tiger II (H) is one of the most formidable German tanks in the game. It is a rank IV, BR 6.7 heavy tank, which is more than a match for most of the tanks it faces at its BR.

It is very well armored, making it a slow-moving unit like all other heavy tanks. But it makes up for its slow speed with its powerful 88 mm long-barrel cannon, which can punch through over 230 mm of armor.

The Tiger II (H) is best suited for players who like to move with caution or engage targets from a long distance. The long 88 mm cannon is extremely effective at distances of around 1500 meters.

3) Maus

The Maus is not only the heaviest German tank but also the heaviest tank in the game. Coming in at 188 tons, it is an absolute behemoth of a tank and is almost impenetrable with all conventional shells.

It is heavily armored on all sides and is equipped with a 128mm cannon as well as a 75mm coaxial cannon. It can penetrate over 300 mm of armor and sometimes even survives bombs. The only downside would be its extremely slow speed, which maxes out at 20 km/h.

The Maus is available every year for a limited time during War Thunder's annual anniversary celebrations.

4) Begleitpanzer 57

The Begleitpanzer 57 is a light tank of West German design. It sits at rank VI, BR 9.3, and is very lightly armored but is quite mobile and very versatile in its role. It is equipped with a 57mm auto-cannon and a TOW anti-tank missile launcher.

It can carry six anti-tank missiles, and on top of that, its auto-cannon can fire both armor-piercing and proximity-fuze shells, making it able to fight both ground and air targets. The icing on the cake is its thermal sight, which makes spotting enemies even easier.

5) Leopard 2A7V

The Leopard 2A7V is the leading tank in the German tech tree. It is a rank VII, BR 11.7 main battle tank and has well-rounded armor, mobility, and firepower. Its wedge armor on the turret provides armor thickness of over 1000 mm at various angles, making the tank almost invincible in a hull-down position.

The long 120mm smoothbore cannon can fire HEAT, time-fuze, and APFSDS shells, and its DM-53 APFSDS shell can penetrate armor over 650mm thick. It has access to thermal sights for both the gunner and the commander, and its engine and transmission enable it to travel at speeds of up to 61 km/h forward and 27.7 km/h in reverse.

There are numerous other German tanks but these five stand out from the rest.
