The Italian air tree in War Thunder was a small one, with not many good aircraft, especially at high tiers. But just like their ground tree, the addition of the Hungarian subtree has given the air tree a major boost in power as well. With the addition of planes like the MiG-29 and the Gripen at high tiers, as well as with the G.55 series and the G.56, Italy is one of the most effective nations in War Thunder at the moment.

On that note, let's look at the five best Italian planes in this military vehicle combat MMO.

What are the five best Italian planes in War Thunder?

1) G.55 serie 1

The G.55 serie 1 is an Italian fighter Rank IV, Battle Rating 5.0 fighter and is very similar to the G.55S. Although it is not the best plane at the BR, it is easy to use and has good maneuverability and firepower to get you some clean kills.

It has the same engine as the German Bf 109 G-2/trop, but its rate of climb is lower. Also, keep in mind that the G.55 compresses at high speeds. However, the high-altitude performance is decent, and its long wingspan allows it to out-turn many other planes.

The G.55 is equipped with two Breda-SAFAT 12.7 mm machine guns and a German 20 mm MG 151 cannon, which can both dish out impressive damage. The performance and weapons make the G.55 decent at 5.0 and especially good for players with less experience, as it is easy to use.

2) Bf 109 G-14/AS

Bf 109s are iconic planes from the World War II era and are highly capable planes in their BRs. The Italian Bf 109 G-14/AS is the same as the Bf 109 G-14 in the German air tree and sits at Rank IV, BR 5.3.

Most Bf 109s are decent at turnfights and energy fights and the G-14 is no different. You have a good climb rate and energy retention, and in the hands of an experienced pilot, it can defeat almost all other planes it encounters. Note that the high-altitude performance is not great, but up to around 4000-4500 meters, the plane is at its best.

The G-14/AS is equipped with a 20 mm MG 151 cannon and two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns. The combined firepower of the 20 mm and 13 mm guns gives the G-14 enough punch to easily shoot down large bombers.

3) MiG-15bis

The MiG-15bis is a subsonic jet fighter that sits at Rank V, BR 8.3. It is part of the Hungarian subtree in the Italian tree and is identical to the original MiG-15bis in the Russian air tree.

The plane has good acceleration and can easily reach speeds of over 900 kmph. The MiG-15 is also extremely adept at turnfighting and energy fights. However, the plane compresses hard after 800-850 kmph, so always use your airbrake when you get into high-speed dogfights.

The MiG-15bis is equipped with two 23 mm NR-23 cannons and one 37 mm N-37D cannon. The guns are slightly difficult to aim due to their low velocity, but once you get used to them, the shells can shoot down most planes with a few hits.

4) F-16A ADF

The F-16A ADF is a fourth-generation supersonic jet fighter that sits at Rank VIII, BR 13.0. This Italian variant is the same as the F-16A ADF in the American air tree in all aspects.

Being part of the A-variant of the F-16, it has the best performance among its variants when it comes to dogfights. It is one of the fastest planes in War Thunder and is exclusively an air-superiority fighter. It is capable of going toe-to-toe with most planes it faces.

This F-16 is equipped with a 20 mm M61A1 cannon, which is highly lethal during dogfights. Its missile loadout includes the IR-guided AIM-9L and the SARH AIM-7M. Coupled with a strong radar, the F-16A ADF is a tough opponent to face in air battles.

5) JAS39EBS HU C

The JAS39EBS HU C is currently the top-tier aircraft in the Italian tech tree. It is the Hungarian variant of the Gripen and is identical to the JAS39C in the Swedish air tree in all aspects but the missile kit.

The flight performance is the same as the top-tier Swedish Gripen. It is a very nimble aircraft and can easily dogfight with any plane it faces. The delta wing with canards gives it a strong turning capability. This helps the Gripen get behind other planes extremely easily.

The plane is equipped with a 27 mm Akan cannon, just like the Swedish one. However, the missile kit is different. This variant of the Grippen carries AIM-9M IR-guided missiles and AIM-120A Fox-3 missiles. Currently, Fox-3-capable missiles are the meta in top-tier air battles in War Thunder.

The plane is also strong when it comes to close air support. It can carry a good loadout of unguided rockets and bombs, besides laser and GPS-guided bombs, and TV-guided AGMs.
