Destiny 2 has several open-world locations that are vital to the main lore of the game. The game has different planets and moons in the SOL system, each with its uniqueness, enemies, background lore, and more. As the years go by, plenty of locations have become fan favorites due to the visuals they provide or the stories they have.
This article lists five such open-world locations of Destiny 2 from 2017 up until now. The following list is also based on preference, as the game has plenty of patrol regions that may attract different players for different reasons.
Do also note that this list is based mostly on visuals and will take the associated lore into account while ranking them.

5 open-world locations ranked from worst to best in Destiny 2
5) European Dead Zone (EDZ)
One of the two main open worlds based on planet Earth, the European Dead Zone is a large patrol region in Destiny 2 with three spawn points, three public events, and 16 Lost Sectors. It is also one of the oldest open-world regions in the game, as the majority of the Year 1 Red War campaign took place on EDZ.
While newer players will find the place pretty basic compared to newer locations, it remains a buffet of nostalgia for veterans. Even after seven years, EDZ remains the primary spot for several weapons calibration objectives, especially the Trostland.
Players will often find forces of Cabal and Fallen fighting in the middle of the Church. Lastly, Trostland has three Lost Sectors that are easy to access and complete, allowing many to score a hefty amount of kills in a short time.
4) Nessus
Much like the EDZ, Nessus was also introduced in the Year 1 of Destiny 2. While the lore behind Nessus is interesting, many players were attracted to the planet simply due to its crimson flora all over the surface, with a heavy influence of the Vex enemy race in structures.
The current Episode Echoes weighed down on the Vex's connection with the Nessus, where the planet underwent minor changes on the surface. While Nessus is not as big in area as EDZ, it still covers quite a lot with three spawn points, five Lost Sectors, and three public events.
3) Pale Heart of the Traveler
As the final destination in the Light vs Dark saga, Pale Heart serves as a great host. It has three main locations with multiple secret sub-locations accessible via caves. The Pale Heart also comes very close to the size of EDZ, and some might argue that the former is larger in area.
Whatever the case may be, The Final Shape's open-world delivered many varieties as promised, alongside tasks to keep a player busy for hours.
Players could also see the Pale Heart changing with the completion of the main quest steps, the Raid, and the epilogue. With beautiful textures, familiar terrains, and rich lore, Pale Heart most certainly lives up to its hype.
2) Europa
Europa is currently the only open world in Destiny 2 that has a dynamic weather system throughout all regions. While Beyond Light is one of the most controversial expansions to date, the soundtracks and the locations are still considered some of the best in the game even after four years.
Europa is known for its peaceful vibes in the snowy terrain, mixed with the iconic Braytech facilities, and for being the hometown of the Eliksni.
1) Dreaming City
Introduced with the Forsaken expansion in Year 2, the Dreaming City certainly stood the test of time. It still is one of the most beautiful destinations in Destiny 2, packed with mysteries, various terrains, and marvelous architecture. The hometown of Awoken has been through a lot. Thankfully, the six-year-long suffering ended with the Season of the Wish storyline before The Final Shape.
The Dreaming City is also home to the critically acclaimed Last Wish Raid, giving players a taste of the aesthetics in every corner of the activity. It is a touch above the rest of the open worlds in Destiny 2, as it mixes the looks of science fiction and fantasy perfectly. The entire location feels like a palace courtyard, with decorated interior paths that may lead to puzzles, collectibles, and other mysteries.
Dreaming City also provides a decent amount of tasks, including three Lost Sectors, three Public events, multiple tasks for the destination seal, and much more.
