Like any other MMORPG, deciding on a build for your character in Throne and Liberty can be challenging. With so many options, you are bound to make mistakes on your first playthrough, which is a normal part of the learning process. However, dumping hours into a character that no longer seems a viable option later on, will be somewhat of a waste.
Of course, you are free to do this as you can create and delete as many characters as you choose. But the time needed to bring them up to speed for end-game content will be backbreaking. Especially, given that you will have to collect Ornate Coins all over again for each new character in Throne and Liberty. That said, here are a few things you can do to avoid situations like this.

Avoid these 5 rookie mistakes to make the most of your first Throne and Liberty character
Don't experiment too much with builds and weapons
Throne and Liberty features multiple, complex progression systems, requiring a significant investment of resources to upgrade things that all somehow tie into your weapons. This includes things such as your skills, passive abilities, and equipment.
Early on in the game, upgrading these facets will be easy. The cost and materials required will be low. You will get whatever you need by completing things, such as For The Ally's Rests Quest and At the Lycan's Hall Quest. The rewards given will allow you to progress easily. However, as you level up, the need for resources increases.
There is also the Weapon Mastery System to take into account. The more you use one single weapon, the better you are at using it. As such, if you decide to shift after even ten hours of using that one weapon, you are going to lose out on a lot of progress. Hours of XP that have trickled into the weapon will be all for nothing.

You can reroll your character and reset everything, but that's not going to be easy. The option to use Skill Conversion Books is also there in Throne and Liberty, but getting them will be hard. You will end up spending more time in pursuit of this item than actually playing the game.
Now, you can have a secondary build in Throne and Liberty. That is a viable option, but you will need to invest a lot of time and resources into it. For this reason, it's better not to be a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to choosing a character build and weapon to master.
You can experiment a bit at the start but only do so to try out what you like. Once you find your niche, stick to it, and build upon the foundation with everything you have.
Keep Skill Growth Books in reserve; hoard them
Skill Growth Books are invaluable assets in Throne and Liberty, allowing you to improve your active and passive skills. This is great cause it cuts down on the time needed to get them up to a certain level. The best part about Skill Growth Books is that you can craft them, but the grind is demanding.
Thus, if you are a new player to Throne and Liberty, and you aren't sure what character build you want to go for, it's advised that you keep these Growth Books in reserve. Once you are sure of your build, only then use them to buff your skills, preferably towards the late-game stage. Do not waste them at the start of your playthrough.
Don't toss a Contract Coin to your Witcher
Contract Coins in Throne and Liberty are absolutely fantastic. You get them by completing Contracts. Throughout your playthrough, you will come across numerous Contracts or varying difficulties that will reward you with Contract Coins. You will be tempted to exchange them at the Contrain Coin Merchant for rewards. This is very normal, but you must resist the temptation. There's a good reason.
Once you reach level 50, you gain access to better rewards. Since you can only do a certain number of Contracts per day, saving Contrat Coins for later will be worth the wait.

I promise you that spending them after you reach level 50 is the best thing to do. That said, you might miss out on good items before you hit level 50, but it will be worth the wait. Saving up for the best will ensure your late-game phase goes smoothly. It will your character an edge out there.
Do not sell your old tier 0/1 equipment
After you level up and collect shiny new gear in Throne and Liberty, you might be tempted to sell your old equipment. This is something that is usually done in numerous MMORPGs. The moment you get higher-level items, the older ones are scrapped. However, if this is your first character and playthrough, you should avoid doing this at all costs.

Instead, depending on the items you need or want, start checking off List Completion Rewards from The Lithography Book. Trade in your old gear to get new shiny gear. Keep in mind, that there are numerous items that you can redeem, but you do not have to get them all. Focus on things that align with your character build to streamline the process.
Go slow, take in everything Throne and Liberty has to offer
Unless you are trying to speedrun Throne and Liberty to beat some oddball record, don't rush the game. It's an incredibly beautiful MMORPG that deserves to be experienced thoroughly. Explore every nook and cranny, take time, and venture into the world to look for quests. Don't rush any part of the experience, and play the game at your pace from start to completion.
This is important because, in most instances, players tend to quit after a few hours and restart with a brand-new character. This is not a bad thing, but you will have to go through the entirety of the game until the point where you left off before moving on to something new. Essentially playing the game twice over until a certain point. Your new character is not going to benefit in any way as such.
Instead of putting in so many hours playing the same thing, take some time out, and read about the do's and don'ts before starting Throne and Liberty. Hopefully, even if you make a few rookie mistakes while creating your first character for a playthrough, it shouldn't affect things to a large extent and compel you to start over from scratch.
