War Thunder is a military vehicle combat MMO with over 2000 historically accurate ground vehicles, planes, helicopters, and ships. The game has numerous excellent tanks with different battle ratings and nations. Tanks like the Tiger II(H), the M48 series, and the Russian high-tier T-series have been a great choice for players for years. However, there are some vehicles, mostly low-tier ones, that are not competitive at all.

This article will look at the five worst tanks in this free-to-play military vehicle combat MMO.

Which are the five worst tanks in War Thunder?

1) Archer

The Archer is a British Rank II, BR 2.7 tank destroyer. It has more than enough firepower to deal with any tank it can face at its BR and even in uptiers. However, that's the only good thing about it.

The worst feature of this tank destroyer is that its gun faces the rear. This means that whenever you want to engage an enemy, you have to turn the whole vehicle around to aim.

Minimal armor and a low reverse speed of just 4 km/h make the vehicle even less survivable. Also, planes can easily strafe it to death since it has an open-top.

2) Chi-Nu

The Chi-Nu is a Japanese Rank III, BR 3.3 medium tank. For a tank of that BR, its firepower is pretty lacking, as the maximum penetration of its shell is just 103 mm. Tanks like the T-34 can easily bounce that.

The firepower is not too bad for its BR as tanks like the Sherman, M24, etc., also have similar penetration. However, the Chi-Nu is even worse when it comes to armor, as every tank can easily demolish it. Even planes with 12.7 mm machine guns and higher will not have much problem penetrating its roof.

The turret rotation is also pretty slow, coming in at just above 6 degrees a second. This means that if anyone outflanks you, you won't be able to turn your gun quick enough to counter them.

3) Chi-Ha

The Chi-Ha is another Japanese medium tank that is lacking in both armor and firepower. Even at BR 1.3, its armor and firepower are drastically inferior to various light tanks.

The maximum penetration that the Chi-Ha's gun has is just 21 mm. Even a lot of light tanks could shrug off a hit with that gun. The armor is even worse than the Chi-Nu. Anyone you see can kill you with one shot.

The only redeeming feature of this tank is that it has decent mobility for its BR.

4) Challenger

The Challenger is a Rank III, BR 5.3 medium tank in the British tech tree. Although the stats of this tank look good on paper, it is not a great vehicle in practice.

It has a woeful lack of armor, making it an easy kill for any other tank at its BR. On top of that, even though it can travel forward with speeds of up to 52 km/h, it can only reverse with a maximum speed of 3 km/h. It has one of the worst reverse speeds of any tank in the game, making it unable to retreat quickly if it gets hit.

Solid shots and the APDS shell can penetrate almost every tank at its BR. However, all these shells have very low post-pen damage. As a result, even if you penetrate another tank, there is a good chance that most of its critical components will stay intact.

If you miss the gunner or are unable to disable the gun, the enemy tank can simply turn its turret and shoot you. Your low reverse speed will also make it incredibly difficult to disengage and retreat to cover if that happens.

The M13/40 (III) is a medium Italian tank at Rank I, BR 2.0. Even though it is a low-tier tank, it suffers in more ways than one. Although it has decent mobility, it lacks a good reverse gear.

The firepower is just barely good enough to kill some very light tanks. With a maximum penetration of just 50 mm, anything with sloped armor or even some heavier armor can just bounce off whatever you throw at it.

The armor protection is minimal, and the armor plates are so thin that even its own low-penetration shell can go through it without any issue.
