Are Destiny 2 Episodes free?

The new Episodes in Destiny 2 replaced the usual seasonal loop of the game. This got several players to wonder whether they were free to play. Seasons have always been the backbone of monthly content in the game, covering almost 80% of an expansion cycle in a year. Similar to the previous seasonal entries in this looter-shooter, the new Episodes are not free-to-play by any means, as all of the pieces of content are locked behind a paywall.

Be it the episodic story, the premium tier of the season pass, or the gear pieces, players must buy either a specific edition of The Final Shape expansion, an annual pass upgrade, or the premium season pass separately only for the rewards.

Destiny 2 Episodes are not free-to-play

Destiny 2 Episodes are essentially extended seasons that are now four months long instead of three. Due to this stretch, Bungie made a few changes that granted increased added features each Episode, including more activities, a story divided into acts to minimize content drought, and 200 season pass levels instead of 100. In turn, there will be three Episodes in the current year, all following the same pattern.

Episodes Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy must all be paid for to gain full access to their features. However, any player looking to access seasonal content for free can look towards the free tier of the season pass, which also brings rewards that include:

Seasonal Legendary and Exotic weapons
Seasonal Exotic weapon's catalyst
Deepsight Harmonizers
A few currencies such as Bright Dust, Eververse Engram, Exotic Engram, and Exotic Cipher.

How to purchase Episodes in Destiny 2?

If you are looking to purchase one Episode in The Final Shape, simply head to the season pass page and get access in exchange for 1500 Silver.

Note that if you purchase one season pass per Episode, you will have to purchase a Dungeon Key once a Dungeon launches. Each Dungeon Key will set you back 2000 Silvers. You can access the Key's purchase page by clicking the Dungeon icon on the map.

Prophecy at the Tower is the only Dungeon in Destiny 2 that is free to play.

For all three seasons, you can purchase The Final Shape + Annual Pass edition only if you do not own the expansion. On the other hand, if you do have the expansion and are planning to purchase all the following Episodes, go for the "Destiny 2 The Final Shape Annual Pass upgrade."

The upgrade will grant all the upcoming Dungeon Keys, all three Episodes, alongside several ornament rewards and the expansion Exotic weapon's Catalyst. Purchasing The Final Shape and the Annual Pass upgrade separately will cost you less than purchasing The Final Shape + Annual Pass bundle.
