Best Flay Barbarian build in Diablo 4 Season 4: Skills, itemization, and glyphs

Diablo 4 Season 4 Flay Barbarian

Flay Barbarian was already pretty amazing in Diablo 4 Season 4, but the 1.4.3 update pushed them just a bit farther. Most builds are pretty fantastic in this season, but we wanted to come back to this one in particular. While it does have drawbacks - needing very specific enchantments and gear to really pop off - it is a remarkably powerful Barbarian build. Once it’s online, it’s incredibly hard to stop.

Whether single-target or AOE, you can drop some incredibly huge amounts of bleed, and make even the most powerful bosses disappear in the blink of an eye. There are few builds more fun than Flay Barbarian, so it’s worth putting the effort into, much like Bash Barbarian is this season.

There are a few ways to play Flay Barbarian in Diablo 4 Season 4. You can go with Leap for more mobility/faster clears, but I prefer going with Steel Grasp. It will help trigger berserk, get Vulnerability stacks going, and in general, get people in range for Flay and Rupture to take hold. This, combined with War Cry, Challenging Shout, and Iron Skin makes you an incredibly tough customer. You can also swap out War Cry for Rend for even more Bleed action.

That’s the real gameplay loop - hitting targets with Flay a few times to get bleeds going, popping Rupture twice, and watching as all that bleed damage triggers at once. You’ve probably seen people do this in Helltides to obliterate bosses. Once you’re deep into the Paragon boards, to get the Hemorrage Legendary Node, you’ll be stacking particular enhancements on all of your gear to maximize damage.

There’s one sort of frustrating thing about Flay Barbarian in Diablo 4 Season 4 though - you really need to be properly itemized. You need a particular Tempering Affix from either a Rogue or Sorcerer character - Cutthroat Finesse (Rogue) or Frost Finesse (Sorcerer).

This gives you access to +Vulnerable Damage, and you want that on your Gloves, Amulet, and Weapons at the start. Thankfully, it’s not hard to grind out unlocking that by simply playing the game, and doing Helltides until you have it.

As a Flay Barbarian in Diablo 4, you’re going to want to focus on Two-Handed Axe Expertise so you stack more Vulnerable Damage. Ideally, you also want to have a Polearm equipped, once you have the Executioner glyph. It brings multiplicative damage to all attacks and then combines that with Flay and Rupture on Two-handed Slashing weapons. This will maximize your damage potential in the long run.

This is where the +Vulnerable Damage from Sorcerer and Rogue comes into play. You’ll want to equip that at first, on your Gloves/Amulet/Weapon for now. This is done through the Tempering system, once you’ve reached a point where you have it unlocked.

You’re going to want a pair of Uniques for this build, and one of them is among the rarest, and most powerful in the game: Harlequin Crest. Those +4 ranks are nothing to sneeze at. It also grants a +20% damage reduction, +42 to all stats, and other excellent features. There’s another Unique you want, and that’s Rage of Harrogath. This is more for your build specifically.

It has Lucky Hit: Inflicting Bleeding on an enemy has an up to 20-40% chance to reduce the Cooldowns of your Skills by 1s. That, along with Thorns, damage reduction against Bleeding Enemies, and more, is a great idea to have in this build, just in general. If you want to make enemies bleed and then explode, Flay Barbarian is the way to go in Diablo 4 Season 4.
