The tech tree for Russian tanks is the largest in War Thunder. By design, Russian tanks are very different from their Western counterparts. While tanks of the Second World era are crude machines with decent armor and good firepower, the more modern ones are top-of-the-line, fast-moving vehicles that can take down any enemy they face. But all Russian designs have two flaws: low gun depression and low reverse speed.

Which are the five best Russian tanks in War Thunder?
1) T-34-57
The T-34-57 is a rank III, BR 4.7 medium tank. It is equipped with a 50 mm cannon that can penetrate armor as thick as 145 mm, which is more than enough penetration for the enemies it faces.

The T-34-57 has decent mobility and can go up to speeds of 49 km/h, but its reverse speed is just around 7 km/h. It has decent armor, which, coupled with its firepower, makes it pretty reliable in full-uptier matches.
2) T-44
The T-44 is a rank IV, BR 6.7 medium tank and is one of the best tanks at its BR. It can go toe-to-toe with rivals like the German Tiger II (H) and the American Super Pershing.
The tank has decent mobility and good firepower. It is equipped with an 85 mm rifled cannon and has extremely good frontal armor. Even Tiger IIs can struggle to get through its upper front plate. The only weak points in its front armor are its turret cheeks.
3) BMP-2M
The BMP-2M is a rank VII, BR 10.0 light tank in the Russian tech tree. It is also a squadron vehicle, which means you can get it even if you do not have any other vehicles of its rank.
Being a light tank, the BMP-2M almost has no armor but has decent mobility and great firepower. It is equipped with a 30mm auto-cannon that can fire APFSDS projectiles, and it also has four anti-tank missile launchers attached to its turret.
The BMP-2M is amphibious and equipped with second-generation thermal sights for its gunner, making it very easy to spot and target enemies. This tank can also track aircraft and get a lead indicator to fire at aircraft.
4) T-80BVM
The T-80BVM is a top-tier Russian main battle tank. It sits at rank VIII, BR 11.7, and is the best T-80 variant in the game. This tank has great mobility and armor, and its 125 mm smoothbore gun can fire rounds such as the 3BM60, which can tear through most tanks in the game.
The BVM has second-generation thermals for the gunner, making it easier to spot targets. Even though the reverse speed is very low, only at 11 km/h, it is still faster than that of most other Russian tanks at its rank, giving it a better chance of disengaging from a fight.
5) T-90M
The T-90M can be considered the best tank in the Russian tech tree as of the Seek and Destroy update. It has excellent armor, incredible firepower with its 125 mm smoothbore gun, and good mobility. It can also fire the 3BM60 APFSDS round.
This MBT has second-generation thermals for both the gunner and the commander, which help it spot enemies from behind a bit of cover. The biggest limitation of the T-90M is its abysmal reverse speed, which maxes out at just 4 km/h.
