Forever Winter is an upcoming extraction shooter set in a war-torn world, where you, the player, are nothing but a scavenger trying to collect all kinds of scraps and resources to survive. In this hopeless world, camaraderie is the last living semblance of civilized human life, and the game motivates you to join friends and others online to band together for a better chance at surviving the horrors.

However, many players aren't happy with playing games, especially extraction shooters, with others. While allies can offer support fire, they can also loot your precious items and even shoot you in the back. Thankfully, it's possible to play Forever Winter solo. On the other hand, offline play is also theoretically possible, but it's not confirmed yet.

Yes, Forever Winter can be played solo. The game is designed to be an online co-op experience where players support each other in this dystopian world to survive the raging war against giant automations. In a recent Discord AMA, the developers shared that the game can also be played solo. You can either go in alone or recruit AI NPCs for support.

However, playing solo makes the game much harder because you won't have access to co-op features like revives or the well-coordinated support a human companion can provide. Nevertheless, some players still prefer to go solo despite the odds because it means they won't have to share loot or risk betrayal from teammates.

Offline play in The Forever Winter explained

While playing solo is viable, there's no confirmation if The Forever Winter can or can't be played offline. The game supports peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, but that doesn't necessarily confirm that it can be played offline.

P2P lobbies can theoretically allow for a full-on offline mode, as you can set up a lobby just for yourself as the local host. However, we don't know whether that will be the case with the P2P implementation of The Forever Winter. If anything, it's unlikely due to how resource tracking works. Warframe sessions, for example, are hosted purely on a P2P lobby basis - but they also require a stable connection to Digital Extremes' servers at all times, even when playing solo.

On the other hand, during the recent Discord AMA, it was mentioned that the water that players have accumulated in their base will drain in real-time. According to some community members, to keep track of water levels, the game may demand a constant internet connection while playing. However, this is based on speculation. So, until an official announcement becomes available, it can't be said for sure if an offline mode will be available in the game or not.
