Can you use Spiritborn in Diablo 4 without buying Vessel of Hatred?

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred introduces the new Spiritborn class, and those new to the franchise are curious to know if they can pick it without buying the expansion. Having a new class added via an expansion or DLC update isn’t new for Blizzard’s hit action-RPG franchise, and while Spiritborn may not be the Paladin that many players were hoping for, it has a lot of promise.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to just pick and use this class in Diablo 4 without buying Vessel of Hatred, we’ve got some bad news for you. If you don’t purchase the expansion, you can't play as the Spiritborn class at all.

It shouldn't be surprising that Spiritborn is locked behind Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred. That is because Druid and Assassin were added to Diablo 2 in a similar way — as well Necromancer in Diable 3. Even the original Diablo added Monk with its Hellfire expansion.

The fact that you can't play as this class without buying Vessel of Hatred is sure to upset many players who didn’t purchase it. Once the expansion is launched, gamers will still be able to take part in everything the game already has.

However, they won’t be able to go to the new region (Nahantu), play as a Spiritborn, or use a few minor features without Vessel of Hatred — like Runewords. However, all hope is not lost.

There’s always the chance that Blizzard will do a free-play weekend, which should give players access to some of the Vessel of Hatred content, and perhaps, even the Spiritborn class. While there's no guarantee of this, it would give players a sneak peek of the new content and let them play as Spiritborn in D4 without having to purchase Vessel of Hatred for a limited time.

If you did purchase the expansion, once it is launched, you can play as a Spiritborn in Season 6 — or through the new story, if that’s what you’d prefer to do. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for a free weekend or get Vessel for Hatred to use the class.
