Destiny 2 developers have canceled their weekly blog post TWID (This Week in Destiny), scheduled for August 1, 2024. This decision was made amid the current situation at Bungie, where almost 17% of the staff were laid off. This came as a surprise to everyone since the recent layoffs followed a successful expansion launch.
The company made the news in October 2023 about a similar situation, where it let go of a huge chunk of its workforce in the middle of the Lightfall year. The recent layoffs seem to affect the community and the developers a lot harder, as most people thought Bungie was going in the right direction until now.
The TWID cancelation announcement came from the official Destiny 2 Team X account. This decision was made to provide time for colleagues and friends. Many community members are in support, as releasing a completely unrelated blog post following an event of this scale is not a good look for the company. Players can expect weekly TWID posts to resume from August 8, 2024.
Bungie cancels Destiny 2 weekly blog post amid layoffs
Shortly after the news about the layoffs spread online, the Destiny 2 Team X account confirmed the cancellation of TWID for August 1 to 7, 2024, and ensured all of the confirmed roadmap would be released on schedule.
Here's what Destiny 2's official team had to say regarding the issue:
"Today is a difficult day for the Destiny team. Out of respect to our friends and colleagues, and to give our team time to take care of each other, we are cancelling this week's TWID."
Regarding every content planned for the future, the developers made the following statement in the comments:
"While our team is taking time to help support each other, we want you, our community, to know that we expect no disruption to all of our previously communicated content plans. Our content roadmap remains unchanged. This also includes our future plans for next year and beyond."
As far as the community reactions are concerned, it is safe to assume that no one is happy with Bungie's higher management. Most laid-off developers took to X to express their sadness, frustration, and anger.
Players can expect radio silence from Bungie until the weekly reset on August 6, 2024. With the Solstice event being scheduled around the same time, the company is also expected to release a large-scale update to change some of the current sandbox meta.
