With the release of The Final Shape, the Pathfinder system has replaced Destiny 2's Bounties. This new system utilizes the old formula of giving you various randomized challenges to complete, with these tasks letting you cut a path through the challenge tree. At the end of this path lie various prizes, including Prime Engrams.
If you are returning to Destiny 2 after a long time, the apparent complexity of this system can seem daunting. However, it is quite simple once you get the hang of it. In this guide, we will outline everything you need to know about the Destiny 2 Pathfinder system.
How to access Pathfinder in Destiny 2?
Following the Final Shape update, the Pathfinder node can be found on the Vanguard, Gambit, or Crucible menu. If you are a newer player, here's a simpler breakdown of how to access Pathfinder:
- Open the map and go to Destinations
- Go to either Vanguard, Crucible, or Gambit
- The access to the Pathfinder menu can be found on the bottom-left of the screen. If you're on a console, the keybind to access this is Left on your D-pad.
Note that this is how you access the Ritual Activity Pathfinder, a.k.a the general non-Destination variant, and not the Destination Pathfinder. Read along to find out the difference between the two.
Destiny 2: How to make progress on the Pathfinder?
The Pathfinder menu will have 20 'nodes' which are unlocked by completing specific objectives under specific scenarios, such as igniting X amount of enemies.
Each objective completion grants you nothing other than some XP - the bigger prize lies at the end of the line.
Your goal here is to make it to the end of the 'path' by tracing a line to the end. In other words, you are quite literally finding your path to the Paths Completion Reward by beating consecutive challenge milestones.
As a result, the most efficient way to make progress depends on the ease of the nodes themselves. After each reset, see if you can cut a path with the most attainable challenges. If you get lucky, you will be done in no time.
Apart from the good amount of RNG involved, the better you are at calculating opportunity cost the more you will get out of Pathfinders in Destiny 2.
Destination Pathfinders: How is it different from Ritual Activity Pathfinder?
With Ritual Activity Pathfinders, the objectives can be done from anywhere: Nightfall, Onslaught, Vanguard, Crucible, or Gambit playlist. This universality makes it a much more streamlined system compared to the now-retired Bounties.
However, 'Destination Pathfinders' is a variant of the Pathfinder system that can only be unlocked by beating The Final Shape's campaign in Destiny 2. Destination Pathfinders are the same as Ritual Pathfinders, except that the objectives here offer different rewards and can only be completed from The Pale Heart area.
What are the Paths Rewards for each successful completion?
Ritual Pathfinders
The Paths Completion Reward will be the following for the first completion of the week:
- Prime Engram
- 150x Bright Dust
- Enhancement Prism
- 25000 Challenger XP
You can get the completion reward and reset the menu as many times as you want, but with diminishing rewards:
- After the first reset, the amount of XP is reduced to 4000 each run until your 8th completion.
- After the 8th completion, you get only 30 Bright Dust instead of 150 on top of diminished XP. The other rewards remain the same.
Destiny Pathfinders
Completing each objective gives you 25 Vendor Reputation and 4000 XP. In addition, the Paths Completion Rewards are:
- First completion: Exclusive Exotic, Tier 3 Engram for Pale Heart gear, Vendor Reputation rank-up, 25000 XP
- Second completion: Exclusive Exotic, Focusable Pale Heart Engram, 375 Vendor Reputation, 25000 XP
- Third completion: Focusable Pale Heart Engram, 375 Vendor Reputation, 25000 XP
- Fourth completion and beyond: World Legendary Engram, 150 Vendor Reputation, 4000 XP
Note that the Pathfinder progress resets weekly, and your objective completion tier will not be carried forward. After each weekly reset, all players will start with the same set of randomized objectives. However, manual resets will give you a randomized set of objectives unique to your account.
