Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred introduced Forgotten Souls - a new, rare crafting material. If you want to improve your powerful Ancestral gear — whether at the Blacksmith or the Occultist — you’re going to want as much of this stuff as possible. Unfortunately, that’s going to take a pretty serious grind, as it’s only found in very specific types of content.
Thankfully, it’s only going to affect players hunting down Ancestral gear and trying to complete harder content. Casual players who aren’t seeking to go into the Torment difficulties won’t need it. However, if you’re like me, and need way more Forgotten Souls in Diablo 4, here’s what you should do.

How to easily farm Forgotten Souls in Diablo 4
Forgotten Souls can be farmed in a variety of ways, thanks to a recent Diablo 4 hotfix. All endgame content now drops this crafting material: Dungeon Bosses, Whisper Caches, Lair Bosses - provided you’re on Torment I difficulty or higher. Here’s how many Forgotten Souls you’ll get per drop, based on the difficulty:
- Torment I: 3 Souls
- Torment II: 5 Souls
- Torment III: 7 Souls
- Torment IV: 10 Souls
My preferred method of farming Forgotten Souls in Diablo 4 is from Helltide events - specifically Blood Maidens, and Tortured Gifts. You can find them in Screaming Hell Veins as well, and by slaying Helltide Harbingers.
My preferred method of farming Forgotten Souls is to kill the Blood Maiden over and over again. This is for a few reasons. It’s an excellent exp for your Paragon levels, and there are almost always other players around to help. Killing the Blood Maiden as a group grants free Aberrant Cinders, alongside other rewards.
While you can do this most times of day, the best time, for my money, is during peak hours, when tons of people are on and farming the Blood Maiden. This just speeds the process up, allowing you to get more Forgotten Souls in shorter amounts of time.
I’ve picked up three Forgotten Souls each time I killed the Blood Maiden in Diablo 4 - whether I contributed with Baneful Hearts or not. Doing this a few times not only nets you the Forgotten Souls among other rewards, but it also leads to another guaranteed Forgotten Souls drop.
When you have 250 Souls, check your map for an orange Tortured Gifts chest - as seen in the image above. Other Tortured Gifts can drop them too, but I’ve always received them from the orange chest.
These, among other things, will always drop Forgotten Souls in some quantity. There is one of these in each Helltide zone, so you can easily swap to the other zone and farm up some Aberrant Cinders. Just make sure you have an overpowered build if you’re going into higher difficulty levels.
However, you don’t have to just grind Helltides! Thanks to that hotfix, you can find Forgotten Souls in virtually any endgame content. I prefer to grind Helltides until I get tired of it, then swap to Whisper Caches or Nightmare Dungeons.
Remember, the higher your Torment difficulty, the higher the amount of these you get per drop. At the end of the day, you can grind whatever content is most enjoyable for you, thanks to Blizzard fixing how many/where this crafting reagent drops.
