A point of contention during Once Human’s various beta tests were the nature of controller support. Players had to find a variety of workarounds to use a controller to play the game. This made them worried that it would remain that way when the title eventually went live. While many prefer keyboard/mouse controls for survival MMOs, this RPG will also be available on mobile devices at a later date.
Controller support is important in games like Once Human, whether it’s for comfort or to help with certain physical disabilities a player might have. Regardless of the issues that were faced in the testing phases, the game's developers have confirmed that it will launch with controller support.
Once Human will have controller support at launch
Once Human will have controller support at launch, according to the developers. The game's official X account replied to a user who asked about this very important feature. According to the reply, controller support will be available when the game releases on July 9, 2024.
The reply did not specify which types of controllers would be viable, but as it’s a title on Steam, it will likely allow PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S controllers, possibly even Nintendo Switch pro controllers.
This was a real point of contention for those who were in the Closed Beta Test for the game. To access controller support, they had to jump through several hoops, such as launching Steam in Admin Mode, and had to go into their settings.
Since controller support wasn’t officially confirmed yet, players had to add a Non-Steam game, find its installation directory, and use that.
There were also pre-made layouts in Steam at the time to make things just a bit easier, but none of it was official. When the title launches for PC, it will have controller support. This will also probably be the case when it eventually goes live on mobile devices.
Once Human will likely have plug-and-play support with your controllers, provided you have those settings turned on in your Steam client. Unfortunately, we do not know if the game will support all controller icons though, or if it will stick to simply showing one set of button types - Xbox’s XYAB, or PlayStation’s Cross Square, Triangle, Circle.
