Elon Musk got kicked out of Path of Exile 2 for "performing too many actions too fast," as he shared in a recent X post. The tech billionaire has picked up quite a reputation in the ARPG community, previously as an ex-claimant of Diablo 4 Pit Leaderboards, and more recently as a gratified Path of Exile 2 convert. His attempt to put out the same level of gamer APM credentials in the newly released hit Early-Access game has unfortunately tripped up the game's automated macro-detection system.
Elon's claim, of course, is that he's simply too fast for the game:
"Wasn't even using a macro lol"
To clarify things, "kicked" here does not mean timed out or banned — it means forcefully disconnected out of an active Path of Exile 2 session.
Is Elon Musk too high-APM, or is it a return of an old bug in Path of Exile 2?
To keep things fair in its competitive leaderboard, live-service games often employ automated systems that read runtime data to detect whether something is off. One of the most obvious metrics for this is keypresses, to which there's a threshold that delineates human-like APM and potential macro usage.
Elon Musk, of course, claims to not have used a macro, which would indeed be considered an unfair advantage in any game with a competitive leaderboard. This leaves out two possibilities.
The first is that the dedicated Monk player is too fast compared to what the game expects of the average human. Most devoted Elon fans would not doubt that this is the case, as the quirks of a billionaire working as an executive in numerous tech companies (and soon-to-be presidential advisory body) and still finding time to play ARPGs and be prolific on social media paints a rather exceptional picture.
The second (and perhaps more likely) case is that it's a bug. Specifically, it's a bug that started cropping up in the first Path of Exile game earlier this year, where numerous players reported being wrongfully kicked out of the game with the same message even though they were using a two-button setup. Although it's not widely known to recur in Path of Exile 2, its return would not be amiss as a reasonably bug-prone Early Access experience.
