Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail brings back a classic gear set: Artifact gear. This is job-specific gear that has appeared throughout the game’s history as a solid way to get started on gearing up, once you’ve reached a particular level. Thankfully, it’s not a challenging set of equipment to get, and you can unlock them for all jobs in the game - provided you have the time to level grind, and also have enough inventory space for it.
This includes the new jobs like Pictomancer and Viper in Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail as well! All the combat jobs will have a set of artifact gear, that features a familiar look from somewhere in the franchise’s history. You can see above the White Mage artifact gear, which is a classic “white robed” healer style. Once you meet certain conditions, it can also be dyed in other colors.

When to unlock job-specific Artifact gear in Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail
After completing the level 99 Main Story Quest In Pursuit of Sphene, you can unlock Final Fantasy 14’s job-specific artifact gear. It will take a significant grind, as this is deep into the Main Story of the Dawntrail expansion. We won’t spoil anything to do with that quest, story-wise, but it involves an ally of the Warrior of Light setting up some provisions for the mission ahead.
After completing this quest, Mewazunte in Tuliyollal (12.4, 12.9) will give you a series of artifact gear sets to choose from, divided by roles. You cannot separate these out, so just look for items of the same name - such as the Piety Robes, Piety Fingerstalls, and Piety Slops. In total, you’ll get access to the following gear for free:
- Weapon
- Helmet
- Chest
- Gloves
- Legs
- Boots
This equipment is all item level 690, and each one has two empty Materia slots to equip. You can return to this NPC at any time to re-acquire the artifact gear in FF14 for free, as well. As long as you’re level 99 with a job, you can come back and claim a set - provided you met the initial conditions.
How to dye Artifact gear in Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail
You can also dye the artifact gear, but it requires you to complete the optional Role Quests in Final Fantasy 14 for your class type. Since I’ve completed the Healer Role Quests, I can dye any of the healer artifact gear in FF14 that I decided to unlock.
Now that players can add two colors to each piece of gear, it increases the number of possible combinations and great looks players can give to this classic Final Fantasy equipment.
