Soulframe, a new upcoming MMORPG side-project from Digital Extremes, had its very first official Devstream during TennoCon 2024. The game leverages a lot of the design philosophy of Warframe, but it will embark on its own unique creative direction. The first Devstream gave us a couple of key details about how it does things differently; a first look at its character creation system was also provided.
Here's everything we learned from this first Soulframe Devstream, to be followed by many more in the years to come.
Soulframe's character creation is poetry in motion
While Warframe lets you customize your "character" after a certain point in the story, Soulframe will give you the reins from literally the beginning. The live gameplay demo presented during TennoCon 2024 shows the Envoy (your character) reliving a memory from their infancy.
As their mother nurtures them, you pick out some basic details such as hair and eye color through an Ode recited by the narrator.
Pacts and "Evil Paths": Getting your Edgelord on
Soulframe has a class system through "Pacts," which physically changes the look of the Envoy's cursed arm, as well as the powers bequeathed by it. It will also be tied to a moral alignment system of sorts, where you can choose to harness the "corrupted, polluted technology" of the Ode, the big bad.
Healing and healing poultices: Soulframe will have an Elixir system
The gameplay demo showcased some combat and a new boss called "Nimrod." As the name implies, this giant miniboss will channel the powers of lightning with its tesla-coiled melee staff.
The combat mechanic seen throughout the demo does not tease anything particularly new, but the new NPC the Envoy encounters has big implications. Soulframe is a game about "healing" the corruption around you, but you can also heal in a more literal sense with Elixirs.
Verminia, the newly unveiled "Ancestor" will settle down in the Night-fold (your personal homestead in a dream-like plane) and offer you two types of items: potions and cosmetics. The latter will obviously be a big part of a sister project to Warframe, but potion-crafting is a new feature shown off in TennoCon 2024.
Thus far, we have seen two concoctions: a basic life potion to chug in danger, and an Elixir that changes the weather itself - helping the Envoy bring down the Nimrod. This range alone displays great possibilities, and we can't wait to find out more.
Soulframe Preludes (a series of pre-pre-pre-Alpha builds) has already had several closed playtest sessions, but the developers intend to extend the invitations to a broader playerbase for an upcoming beta this fall.
