From swiped currencies to locked accounts, the Path of Exile 2 hacker problem is troubling

Hacking is becoming a real issue in Path of Exile 2 right now, with many reporting lost/stolen items (Image via Grinding Gear Games)

Tragedy has struck the Path of Exile 2 community, with waves of accounts being hacked. Players worldwide are losing Divine Orbs, powerful gear, and so much more — likely to be sold on third-party sites, or, even the game’s official trade website. Over the past few weeks, everyone, from major content creators to regular users on Steam, has been reporting that they have had items stolen.

Furthermore, some even claim it is ignoring Steam’s 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication). While unfortunately, there’s no solution to this problem, as of this writing, one thing is clear — players in Path of Exile 2 are being hacked and having their hard-won items stolen.

There’s no clear path to keeping you and your Divine Orbs safe, but there are a few things we do know.

GGG won't restore stolen items to redress hacked users in Path of Exile 2

We aren’t covering this to alarm or scare anyone, but there’s a real serious hacking threat going on in Path of Exile 2 right now. SnooBAE85, a prominent content creator in the Path of Exile space, posted a video last week about how he had all his Divine Orbs and equipment stolen through unknown means.

In his recent video, Snoo highlighted some important themes of the hack, i.e., what’s being stolen or removed from players’ accounts. These thieves aren’t taking everything. They're focusing only on stuff that has value. All equipment is stripped, as are all Divine Orbs. Then, any Uniques in your Stash that are worth multiple Divine Orbs are also stolen.

This equipment is then thrown to other accounts, and put on the trade site for incredibly low prices. However, the characters aren’t deleted — though it’s speculated, that this is just to potentially steal from this person again, at a later date. Email accounts aren’t being compromised either, since 2FA is being completely bypassed.

Unfortunately, Grinding Gear Games is not going to return these items to you, either. Those items are gone for good, likely traded or sold to other players for a profit. They could also be sold on third-party websites as well. It’s recommended players who have issues email GGG at [email protected] and they will look into the matter, but there’s no confirmed case of players having items returned.

One member of the team already made it clear that using the forums to complain about being hacked in Path of Exile 2 isn’t the correct answer. Edmund_GGG pointed this out on the forums proper:

“Unfortunately we cannot directly respond to account issues on the forums.” - Edmund_GGG

So, if you do have issues with being hacked, send them an email instead. While we don’t know what is causing this threat to spread across the Path of Exile 2 community, we do know that GGG will lock down a player’s account temporarily to contain the security breach until the root(s) of the problem is identified.

If you haven’t had your Path of Exile 2 account hacked yet, that’s certainly good news. If you want to try and take some steps, doing the following won’t guarantee your safety, but are certainly steps in the right direction:

  • Change your password to something more secure/unique compared to other accounts.
  • Stop using third-party overlays/apps that are connected to PoE 2
  • Avoid using the trade website for now
  • Do not accept friend requests from anyone you do not 100% know
  • If you're using third-party websites to buy/trade items, cease doing so

We do not know if avoiding friend requests or the trade site will do anything to protect you. We also cannot confirm that using third-party websites to buy items will get you hacked, but it's likely safer to avoid that.

The real roots of the implied security breach on hacked Path of Exile 2 accounts remain unknown, as does the commonality of the problem.

For now, all we can do is wait for an official statement from GGG regarding the issue. As of this writing, no such public statement has been issued regarding the growing problem, nor what practices one should espouse to prevent it. A point of consideration is the unfortunate timing of this threat in the winter holidays. Another factor is how the nature of a security-related problem may complicate such direct addresses till countermeasures have already been deployed.
