As a co-op title that places some emphasis on synergy, there are good reasons why you would want to invite friends in The First Descendant. With a pre-made squad, you can organize and combine Descendants that synergize well, which makes the majority of the game much easier than diving headlong into public matchmaking.
Like many other gameplay elements, though, adding friends in The First Descendant is locked behind menus that not all players can navigate intuitively. In this guide, we will go over how to add other players as friends in The First Descendant, and how to invite them for a co-op session.
How to add your friends in The First Descendant
To add friends in The First Descendant, you have to go to the 'Social' tab on the Quest menu. It can be found towards the right of the 'Journal' tab that you get from opening this menu (default PC hotkey is J).
From the Social menu, you can add friends in various ways. You can search them by their Unique ID on the 'Player Search' field. If any of your friends from your Steam/PSN/Xbox friend list is currently playing The First Descendant, they can also be found here.
If none of your friends play the game, the Social menu also has handy ways to find friends in the wild. On the bottom-left list, you can find recent players you partied up with (via invite or automatic matchmaking).
At the top-left corner, you will find all the players in your current lobby. This works both in the hub city (Albion) or out in the maps, where you can find players in the middle of a field operation. Note that there is a total friend limit of 50 in the release client of The First Descendant, but this may be expanded later.

How to invite friends in The First Descendant
You can go up to any player in Albion or in other regions and press 'T' to open a sub-menu where you can send them a Party Invitation. This menu also features another avenue to directly add the player as a friend, message them privately, or block all communication from them.
To invite a player you have already added as a friend, simply go to Quest menu > Social tab, and invite them from the central panel.
