How to change gear appearance in Once Human

While collecting loot in Once Human you may want to change the appearance of your gear if you don't like the way your character looks. Most of the items in this game are meant to appear very dirty and worn, but some may prefer a different style. Thankfully there is a way to change the way your gear looks aesthetically without altering the stats.

Since players typically spend a lot of time customizing their Once Human character, being stuck with unattractive gear because it's strong is unfortunate. So in this guide, we're going to show you the step-by-step process to properly alter your gear appearance without having to unequip anything.

How to apply gear cosmetics in Once Human

There are two different ways to alter your gear appearance in Once Human, with neither affecting your gear itself (other than aesthetically).

The first way to modify the look of your gear is to hide the piece entirely. Open the gear menu and hover your mouse over a piece that you want hidden. With your mouse over the piece press the 'V' key (on PC) and it will be hidden when playing. This will not remove the gear from your character but make it invisible to yourself and others when in the open world.

The second way to modify your gear appearance is to apply a cosmetic skin to it. To apply a skin to your gear piece, navigate to the cosmetics menu on your character screen. Once at this menu, you can choose gear slots individually and apply skins to each respective slot.

Cosmetics that are applied to these slots will not change even if your gear is swapped. This means that once you have selected your desired cosmetic gear appearance, you're free to change pieces however you want without having to reset the cosmetics. Cosmetics also do not have a level requirement in Once Human.

While playing Once Human, you will likely encounter items called gear mods. These items can be found as loot from enemies, chests, and quest rewards. Gear mods act as stat bonuses that are stronger when several of the same are applied to multiple pieces of gear.

To equip a gear mod, navigate to the gear section of your character menu and hover over the desired piece, then right-click. Doing this will allow you to select a mod that you have in your inventory and place it into the respective gear. This will buff your gear substantially and make your Once Human character much stronger.
