The Gene Scanner in ARK Survival Ascended is a newly introduced device in the latest update of the Bob's Tall Tales DLC. This tool is part of the Traits system, which allows you to scan and extract special passive bonuses from dinos and apply them to your tamed or bred creatures of the same species.

The Gene Scanner in ARK Survival Ascended is an exclusive feature of the Bob's Tall Tales Steampunk Ascent update. This expansion is not a free add-on like Aberration, Scorched Earth, and The Center, so you must purchase it to access the scanner.

Once you have access to the DLC, you can unlock the Gene Scanner Engram in ARK Survival Ascended at Level 86 and craft it at a Fabricator.

As mentioned, the main function of the Gene Scanner in ARK Survival Ascended is to scan the Traits of other creatures by holding H on your keyboard. These Traits can then be extracted and implanted into your tamed or bred dinos (as long as they are still babies since Traits can't be applied to fully grown creatures). The scanner can store up to 10 Gene Traits at a time.

Additionally, the scanner allows you to track nearby creatures of your chosen species, up to a maximum level of 120, by holding the R key and selecting the appropriate option.

The Gene Scanner also allows you to extract Embryos from mammals, which can then be placed in an Embryo Incubator to hatch baby dinos or destroy them. It even features a Gestation Monitor, enabling you to scan the stats and other information about the Embryo directly from the parent dino.
