As your inventory storage fills up with fodder weapons, you'll soon want to learn how to dismantle weapons in The First Descendant. This is a basic action that is not very well-explained in the game's tutorial, but it's important for the looting and shooting to continue smoothly. If you're not sure how this mechanic works, we have you covered.

Dismantling weapons in The First Descendant is actually quite simple after trying it a few times. In this guide, we explain how to do so, what things you can dismantle, and what you get.

How to assign and dismantle junk weapons in The First Descendant

To Dismantle weapons or equipment in The First Descendant, you have to assign them as 'Junk' first.

To do this, open up the inventory screen (default key bind 'I' on PC), then click on any weapon to open your weapons inventory where you can view all the guns you've picked up from the field. Mouse over any weapon and click 'J' to assign them as Junk. Then, hold down 'Ctrl' to dismantle that weapon.

Dismantling weapons does not revert XP and Mastery progress on that weapon, as Weapon Proficiency in The First Descendant is saved on an account-wide basis for each unique gun.

Dismantling weapons in The First Descendant is a regular part of your gameplay loop, as you want to make space in your inventory to pick up new stuff. It takes a long time to dismantle weapons one by one, but thankfully, they can all be done at once.

When in the weapons inventory, hold down 'Shift' to assign all non-equipped weapons as Junk. Then, hold down 'Ctrl' to dismantle them all and retrieve the spoils.

Here are some things to keep in mind while dismantling weapons in The First Descendant:

  • Do not dismantle Ultimate weapons in The First Descendant, as these are time and resource-intensive to craft, and you can always level them up with Precision Phase Exchangers.
  • Also take note of the optimization requirements for your desired Reactor, as these often require a specific type of weapon to be equipped in your loadout.

What do you get from Dismantling junk in The First Descendant?

In this game, you can dismantle not just weapons, but also Reactors and External Components. In addition to decluttering your inventory, you also get various resources from dismantling junk:

  • Dismantling weapons gives Superalloy and Liquid Metal.
  • Dismantling Reactors gives Solenoid and Superconductor Core.
  • Dismantling External Components gives Void Organism.

Note that you can also get Kuiper Shards from dismantling Modules in The First Descendant. However, this is done through a special vendor called Sillion in Albion, and you cannot assign Modules as junk.

The First Descendant: Should you sell or Dismantle Weapons?

Dismantling is not the only option to get rid of trash weapons in this game - you can also sell them to Deslin in Albion. However, selling weapons only gives a meagre amount of gold per weapon. Given how easy it is to earn gold in The First Descendant, dismantling weapons gives you much more valuable resources than selling them off.
