How to enable WASD movement in Diablo 4

Diablo 4, like all games in the series, has a default of click-to-move, i.e., you use the left mouse button (LMB) to click a spot on the map to go there, but you can also use WASD. Movement usually works with click-to-move, or you hold down the button and move around in whatever direction you’re aiming. Most players use this or a controller, but Blizzard has also given players the ability to swap to more traditional PC gaming/MMO controls.

Moving with WASD in Diablo 4 is possible, and while it might feel awkward to a number of players, there are MMO veterans who prefer this, especially if you use a mouse with extra buttons on the side, such as the Razor Naga. If you want to change your movement setup, here’s how to do it.

WASD movement was added to Diablo 4 relatively early in its lifetime, and it was also made incredibly easy to set up. If you want to change to this control scheme in Blizzard’s latest MMO/Action RPG, just press Escape, and open Options. Then, open the Controls Tab, and select Key Bindings.

Look for Preset, which has a dropdown box that is likely set to Mouse Movement. There are two options for you to choose from: Keyboard Movement, or Keyboard Only. These are fairly similar, with one or two major and noteworthy differences in Diablo 4. Keyboard Movement in Diablo 4 is the primary WASD setting.

It allows you to move around with the WASD keys, but you can still use your mouse to attack and aim. Conversely, if you’re using Keyboard Only, it disables Mouse input entirely and only allows you to use your keyboard. However, you still need the mouse for many of the UI elements in the game - it only really changes for combat. This system is similar to using a controller as it will auto-target, likely in the specific direction you’re facing.

Personally, it’s not the ideal setting - if I were going to use WASD in D4, I’d use Keyboard Movement, instead of Keyboard Only. Despite primarily being a controller player, I do like still having access to my mouse in a great deal of settings.

Sometimes, running over an item and picking it up just doesn’t work with the clutter on the ground - being able to left-click them is nice. While there isn’t as much loot dropping normally compared to Path of Exile, a loot filter would solve this problem.
