War Thunder is an F2P military vehicle combat MMO with the option to spend money on premium vehicles, currency, and premium time. That said, the presence of such payment options in the game raises the question: how far can you progress as a fully free-to-play player? In short, you can grind the whole game as a free player. It will take longer but you have access to the entire game.
This article explains what you can and cannot do as an F2P player in War Thunder.
War Thunder: How far can you go as an F2P player?
You can download the complete game with all the tech trees and vehicles directly from the War Thunder website or Steam without having to spend a single penny on anything. You have access to every tech tree, vehicle, event, and even the Battle Pass without paying for them.
Being an F2P player in War Thunder only means that your grind will be longer. You can lose Silver Lions – the standard game currency – if your match does not go well. Moreover, the cost of repair for your vehicles and ammo replenishment could be higher than what you earned.

If you are a premium player, you earn more Silver Lions and Research Points per match and do not lose any currency. This is because if a premium player loses more than he has earned, the net amount is squared to zero, meaning that they neither earn nor lose any currency.
Also, another difference is that premium players get the option to ban one map in Ground Battles and Air Battles each. Other than that, there isn't much difference between premium and F2P.
As an F2P player, you can get a premium account by grinding events in the game and getting event vehicles. You can then sell these vehicles on the Gaijin Marketplace for Gaijin Coins, which can then be used to buy premium time, premium account, or Golden Eagles from the Gaijin Store.
